Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2009 Toyota Sequoia. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: When replacing the VSC actuator assembly, perform zero point calibration (See CALIBRATION  ).
  1. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STOP LIGHT SWITCH) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Select the Data List mode on the Techstream.

      ABS/VSC/TRAC 

      DATA LIST REFERENCE

      Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      STOP Light SW Stop light switch / ON or OFF ON: Brake pedal depressed
      OFF: Brake pedal released
      -

      OK: ON (brake pedal is depressed) appears on the screen. 

    NG:  Go to step  3

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  2. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Clear the DTC (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).
    2. Check if the same DTC is output (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Result Proceed to
      DTC is output A
      DTC is not output B

    B: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS (SYMPTOM SIMULATION)  (See HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING )

    A: REPLACE VSC ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL  )

  3. INSPECT FUSE (STOP) 
    1. Remove the STOP fuse from the engine room relay block.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      STOP fuse Always Below 1 Ω

    NG: CHECK FOR SHORTS IN ALL HARNESSES AND CONNECTORS CONNECTED TO FUSE AND REPLACE FUSE

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  4. INSPECT STOP LIGHT CONTROL RELAY (BRK NO. 1, BRK NO. 2) 
    1. Remove the stop light control relays (BRK NO. 1 and BRK NO. 2) from the engine room relay block.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      for BRK NO. 1 

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      3 - 4 When battery voltage is not applied to terminals 1 and 2 Below 1 Ω
      3 - 5 When battery voltage is not applied to terminals 1 and 2 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 4 When battery voltage is applied to terminals 1 and 2 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 5 When battery voltage is applied to terminals 1 and 2 Below 1 Ω

      for BRK NO. 2 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      3 - 4 When battery voltage is not applied to terminals land 2 Below 1 Ω
      When battery voltage is applied to terminals 1 and 2 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPLACE STOP LIGHT CONTROL RELAY 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  5. INSPECT STOP LIGHT SWITCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the A4 switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance 

      RESISTANCE REFERENCE

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      1 - 2 Pin not pushed Below 1 Ω
      Pin pushed 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 4 Pin not pushed
      Pin pushed Below 1 Ω

    NG: REPLACE STOP LIGHT SWITCH ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (BATTERY - SKID CONTROL ECU) 
    1. Disconnect the A19 ECU connector.
    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A19-11 (STP2) - Body ground Brake pedal depressed 8 to 14 V
      A19-11 (STP2) - Body ground Brake pedal released Below 4.0 V
      A19-41 (STP) - Body ground Brake pedal depressed 8 to 14 V
      A19-41 (STP) - Body ground Brake pedal released Below 4.0 V

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR

    OK: REPLACE VSC ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL  )
