Starter Signal Circuit: Procedure

  1. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Starter Signal.
    5. Check the result when the ignition switch is turned ON and the engine starts.

      OK

      Condition Starter Signal
      Ignition switch ON Close
      Engine start Open
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      Outside standard range (for manual transmission models) A
      Outside standard range (for automatic transmission models) B
      Within standard range (for manual transmission models) C
      Within standard range (for automatic transmission models) D

  2. INSPECT CLUTCH SWITCH START ASSEMBLY

    1. Remove the clutch start switch.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      1 - 2 ON (pushed) Below 1 Ω
      1 - 2 OFF (free) 10 kΩ or higher
      TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION

      *1 Component without harness connected
      (Clutch Start Switch)

    NG → See step   12 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

    1. Disconnect the ignition switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      2 (AM1) - 1 (ST1) START position Below 1 Ω

    NG → See step   13 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY - CLUTCH START SWITCH ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Disconnect the ignition switch connector.
    2. Disconnect the clutch start switch connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A1-1 (ST1) - A9-1 Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard Resistance (Check for Short)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A1-1 (ST1) or A9-1 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CLUTCH START SWITCH - ECM - STA RELAY) 
    1. Remove the STA relay from the engine room relay block.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Disconnect the clutch start switch connector.
    4. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      1 (STA relay) - E77-10 (STA) Always Below 1 Ω
      1 (STA relay) - A9-2 Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard Resistance (Check for Short)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E77-10 (STA) or A9-2 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      Outside standard range A
      Within standard range B

    A → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

  6. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

    1. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      4 - 5 Shift position P, N Below 1 Ω
      4 - 5 Shift position not P, N 10 kΩ or higher
      TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION

      *1 Component without harness connected
      (Park/Neutral Position Switch Assembly)

    NG → See step   14 

    OK: Go to next step 

  7. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

    1. Disconnect the ignition switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      2 (AM1) - 1 (ST1) START position Below 1 Ω

    NG → See step   15 

    OK: Go to next step 

  8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY - PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH) 
    1. Disconnect the ignition switch connector.
    2. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch assembly connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A1-1 (ST1) - B35-4 Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard Resistance (Check for Short)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A1-1 (ST1) or B35-4 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  9. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY - ECM - STA RELAY) 
    1. Remove the STA relay from the engine room relay block.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    4. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      1 (STA relay) - E77-10 (STA) Always Below 1 Ω
      1 (STA relay) - B35-5 Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard Resistance (Check for Short)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E77-10 (STA) or B35-5 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  10. INSPECT BATTERY 
    1. Check that the battery is not depleted.

      OK

      Battery is not depleted.

    NG → REPLACE BATTERY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  11. CHECK BATTERY TERMINAL 
    1. Check that the battery terminals are not loose or corroded.

      OK

      Battery terminals are not loose or corroded.

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE BATTERY TERMINAL 

    OK → REPAIR OR REPLACE STARTER CIRCUIT (STARTER - STA RELAY) 

  12. REPLACE CLUTCH START SWITCH ASSEMBLY. Refer to REMOVAL 
  13. REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY. Refer to REMOVAL 
  14. REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY. Refer to REMOVAL 
  15. REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY. Refer to REMOVAL
