DTC C0210/33, C0215/34, C1273/73, C1274/74: Rear Speed Sensor RH Circuit; Rear Speed Sensor LH Circuit; Low Output Signal of Rear Speed Sensor RH (Test Mode DTC); Low Output Signal of Rear Speed Sensor LH (Test Mode DTC): Procedure

  1. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (MOMENTARY INTERRUPTION) 
    1. Using the Techstream, check for any momentary interruptions in the wire harness and connector corresponding to a DTC. Refer to CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS .

  2. REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU - REAR SPEED SENSOR) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Repair or replace the harness or connector.
    3. Check for any momentary interruptions between the skid control ECU and rear speed sensor. Refer to CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS .
    4. Check that there are no momentary interruptions.

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  3. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Drive the vehicle at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for at least 60 seconds.
    5. Check if the same DTC is recorded. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTCs (C0210/33 and/or C0215/34) are output A
      DTCs (C0210/33 and C0215/34) are not output B

      HINT: 

      If troubleshooting has been carried out according to the Problem Symptoms Table, refer back to the table and proceed to the next step. Refer to PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE .

    B → END 

    A: Go to next step 

  4. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (REAR SPEED SENSOR) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Select Data List mode on the Techstream. Refer to DATA LIST/ACTIVE TEST .
      ABS/VSC/TRAC

    5. Check that there is no difference between the speed value output from the speed sensor displayed on the Techstream and the speed value displayed on the speedometer when driving the vehicle.

      HINT: 

      Factors that affect the indicated vehicle speed include tire size, tire inflation, and tire wear. The speed indicated on the speedometer has an allowable margin of error. This can be tested using a speedometer tester (calibrated chassis dynamometer). For details about testing and the margin of error, see the reference chart. Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION .

      OK

      The speed value output from the speed sensor displayed on the Techstream is the same as the actual vehicle speed measured using a speedometer tester (calibrated chassis dynamometer).

  5. PERFORM TEST MODE (SIGNAL CHECK) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Perform the sensor check in the Test Mode procedure. Refer to TEST MODE PROCEDURE .

      OK

      All Test Mode DTCs are cleared.

  6. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Drive the vehicle at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for at least 60 seconds.
    5. Check if the same DTC is recorded. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .

      Result

      DTCs (C0210/33 and C0215/34) are not output A
      DTCs (C0210/33 and/or C0215/34) are output (for 2WD) B

  7. CHECK REAR SPEED SENSOR INSTALLATION 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.

    2. Check the speed sensor installation.

      OK

      There is no clearance between the sensor and rear axle carrier.

    NG → See step   27 

    OK: Go to next step 

  8. INSPECT REAR SPEED SENSOR 
    1. Make sure that there is no looseness at the locking part and the connecting part of the connectors.

    2. Disconnect the rear speed sensor connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      for RH 

      for LH

      2 (RR+) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      1 (RR-) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after replacement. Refer to TEST MODE PROCEDURE .

  9. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE) 
    1. Disconnect the skid control sensor wire.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    NG → REPLACE SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE 

    OK: Go to next step 

  10. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU - REAR SPEED SENSOR) 
    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      A39-17 (RR+) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

  11. INSPECT SKID CONTROL ECU (SENSOR INPUT) 
    1. Reconnect the skid control ECU connector.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      for RH 

      for LH

      M12-1 (RR+) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 8 to 14 V
      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      L4-1 (RL+) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 8 to 14 V

    NG → See step   26 

    OK: Go to next step 

  12. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Reconnect the skid control sensor wire and the rear speed sensor connector.
    3. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .
    4. Start the engine.
    5. Drive the vehicle at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for at least 60 seconds.
    6. Check if the same DTC is recorded. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTCs (C0210/33 and/or C0215/34) are output A
      DTCs (C0210/33 and C0215/34) are not output B

      HINT: 

      If troubleshooting has been carried out according to the Problem Symptoms Table, refer back to the table and proceed to the next step. Refer to PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE .

  13. REPLACE REAR SPEED SENSOR AND REAR SPEED SENSOR ROTOR 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Replace the rear speed sensor. Refer to REMOVAL .
    3. Replace the rear axle hub and bearing assembly (rear speed sensor rotor). Refer to REMOVAL .

      HINT: 

      The rear speed sensor rotor is incorporated into the rear axle hub and bearing assembly.

      If the rear speed sensor rotor needs to be replaced, replace it together with the rear axle hub and bearing assembly with rear speed sensor.

      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after replacement. Refer to TEST MODE PROCEDURE .

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  14. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Drive the vehicle at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for at least 60 seconds.
    4. Check if the same DTC is recorded. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTCs (C0210/33 and/or C0215/34) are output A
      DTCs (C0210/33 and C0215/34) are not output B

      HINT:

  15. CHECK REAR SPEED SENSOR INSTALLATION 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.

    2. Check the speed sensor installation.

      OK

      There is no clearance between the sensor and the rear axle carrier.

      The installation nut is tightened properly.

      Torque 

      8.5 N*m (87 kgf*cm, 75 in.*lbf)

    NG → See step   29 

    OK: Go to next step 

  16. CHECK REAR SPEED SENSOR TIP 
    1. Remove the rear speed sensor. Refer to REMOVAL .
    2. Check the speed sensor tip.

      OK

      No scratches, oil or foreign matter on the sensor tip.

      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after cleaning or replacement. Refer to TEST MODE PROCEDURE .

    NG → CLEAN OR REPLACE REAR SPEED SENSOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  17. INSPECT REAR SPEED SENSOR 
    1. Install the rear speed sensor.

    2. Make sure that there is no looseness at the locking part and the connecting part of the connectors.
    3. Disconnect the rear speed sensor connector.
    4. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      for RH 

      for LH

      1 (RR+) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      2 (RR-) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after replacement. Refer to TEST MODE PROCEDURE .

  18. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU - REAR SPEED SENSOR) 
    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

  19. INSPECT SKID CONTROL ECU (SENSOR INPUT) 
    1. Reconnect the skid control ECU connector.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      for RH

      M12-1 (RR+) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 8 to 14 V

  20. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Reconnect the rear speed sensor connector.
    3. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .
    4. Start the engine.
    5. Drive the vehicle at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for at least 60 seconds.
    6. Check if the same DTC is recorded. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .

      Result

      HINT:

  21. REPLACE REAR SPEED SENSOR 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Replace the rear speed sensor. Refer to REMOVAL .
      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after replacement. Refer to TEST MODE PROCEDURE .

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  22. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Drive the vehicle at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for at least 60 seconds.
    4. Check if the same DTC is recorded. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTCs (C0210/33 and/or C0215/34) are output A
      DTCs (C0210/33 and C0215/34) are not output B

      HINT: 

      If troubleshooting has been carried out according to the Problem Symptoms Table, refer back to the table and proceed to the next step. Refer to PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE .

  23. REPLACE REAR SPEED SENSOR ROTOR 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Remove the rear drive shaft assembly. Refer to REMOVAL .
    3. Replace the rear drive outboard joint shaft assembly (rear speed sensor rotor). Refer to DISASSEMBLY .

      HINT: 

      If the rear speed sensor rotor needs to be replaced, replace it together with the rear drive outboard joint shaft assembly.

      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after replacement. Refer to TEST MODE PROCEDURE .

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  24. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Install the rear drive shaft assembly.
    2. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Drive the vehicle at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for at least 60 seconds.
    5. Check if the same DTC is recorded. Refer to DTC CHECK/CLEAR .

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTCs (C0210/33 and/or C0215/34) are output A
      DTCs (C0210/33 and C0215/34) are not output B

      HINT:

  25. CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS (SYMPTOM SIMULATION). Refer to  DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM 
  26. REPLACE BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  27. INSTALL REAR SPEED SENSOR CORRECTLY. Refer to  INSTALLATION 
  28. REPLACE REAR SPEED SENSOR. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  29. INSTALL REAR SPEED SENSOR CORRECTLY. Refer to  INSTALLATION 
  30. REPLACE REAR SPEED SENSOR. Refer to  REMOVAL
