DTC P2121: Throttle / Pedal Position Sensor / Switch "D" Circuit Range / Performance (FROM 12/2010): Procedure

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P2121) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
    5. Read the DTCs.

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTC P2121 is output A
      DTC P2121 and other DTCs are output B

      HINT: 

      If any DTC other than P2121 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    B → See step   6 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ACCEL SENSOR OUT NO. 1 AND ACCEL SENSOR OUT NO. 2) 
    1. Connect Techstream to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Accel Sensor Out No. 1 and Accel Sensor Out No. 2.
    4. Read the values displayed on the Techstream.

      Standard voltage

      Accelerator Pedal Operations Accel Sensor Out No. 1 Accel Sensor Out No. 2
      Released 0.5 to 1.1 V 1.2 to 2.0 V
      Depressed 2.6 to 4.5 V 3.4 to 5.0 V

    OK → See step   7 

    NG: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor connector.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (Check for open)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A19-6 (VPA) - A55-55 (VPA) Always Below 1 Ω
      A19-5 (EPA) - A55-59 (EPA) Always Below 1 Ω
      A19-4 (VCPA) - A55-57 (VCPA) Always Below 1 Ω
      A19-3 (VPA2) - A55-56 (VPA2) Always Below 1 Ω
      A19-2 (EPA2) - A55-60 (EPA2) Always Below 1 Ω
      A19-1 (VCP2) - A55-58 (VCP2) Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (Check for short)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      A19-6 (VPA) or A55-55 (VPA) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      A19-5 (EPA) or A55-59 (EPA) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      A19-4 (VCPA) or A55-57 (VCPA) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      A19-3 (VPA2) or A55-56 (VPA2) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      A19-2 (EPA2) or A55-60 (EPA2) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      A19-1 (VCP2) or A55-58 (VCP2) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the APP sensor connector.
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. REPLACE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Replace the accelerator pedal assembly. Refer to REMOVAL .

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  5. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR DTCS) 
    1. Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    4. Start the engine.
    5. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.
    6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
    7. Read the DTCs.

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTC P2121 is output A
      DTC is not output B

    B → END

  6. GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART 
  7. CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS. Refer to  CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS 
  8. REPLACE ECM. Refer to  REMOVAL
