Steering Column Assembly: Removal: Removal

WARNING:

Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing the steering column

Refer to PRECAUTION .

  1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    WARNING:

    Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

  3. REMOVE STEERING PAD  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 2
  4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the nut and place matchmarks on the steering wheel and steering column.

    2. Using SST, remove the steering wheel.

      • SST: 09950-50013 
        • 09951-05010
        • 09952-05010
        • 09953-05020
        • 09954-05021
      NOTE:

      Apply a small amount of grease to the threads and tip of SST (center bolt) before use.

  5. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER 
    NOTE:

    Failure to follow the correct removal procedure may damage the claws.

    1. Release the tilt lever.
    2. Press the both sides of the lower steering column cover to disengage the 2 claws.

    3. Insert your finger through the tilt lever opening in the lower steering column cover and disengage the claw.

    4. Disengage the 2 claws and remove the lower steering column cover.

      HINT: 

      The claws can be disengaged by pushing the lower steering column cover toward the front of the vehicle while pulling the upper steering column cover.

    5. Disengage the 3 claws, 4 clips, and 2 pins and separate the upper steering column cover.

  6. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect all connectors from the turn signal switch with spiral cable.

  7. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Use pliers to hold the clamp and raise the claw with a screwdriver. Remove the combination switch assembly from the steering column assembly.

  8. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the instrument panel. Refer to REMOVAL .
  9. DISCONNECT POWER STEERING ECU

    1. Detach the power steering motor wire harness and torque sensor wire harness clamps from the power steering ECU side.
    2. Disconnect the 2 steering column connectors from the power steering ECU.
  10. REMOVE LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 21
  11. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET

    1. Turn back the floor carpet, remove the 2 clips and remove the column hole cover silencer sheet.
  12. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

    1. Place matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and steering gear.
    2. Remove bolt A and detach the steering assembly from the steering gear.
    3. Place matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and steering column.
    4. Remove bolt B and detach the steering intermediate shaft from the steering column.
  13. REMOVE BRAKE PEDAL SUPPORT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the brake pedal support. Refer to REMOVAL .
  14. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect all connectors and detach all wire harness clamps from the steering column.
    2. Remove the bolt and 2 nuts and remove the steering column from the instrument panel reinforcement.
