Initializing Tire Pressure Monitor System

NOTE: There are indications in the Toyota service information that 2013-14 models do not require the TPMS initialization function. If there is no TPMS reset switch in the vehicle, only the Registration procedure is needed.
CAUTION: Set tire pressure within the specified range before initializing. DO NOT push the reset switch without adjusting tire inflation pressure of all 4 tires. Otherwise, the low tire pressure warning light may not come on even if the tire pressure is low, or it may come on when the tire inflation pressure is actually normal. If you push the reset switch while the vehicle is moving, initialization is not performed.
NOTE: When initializing the system, the current tire condition is stored as a standard.
NOTE: Perform the tire pressure adjustment after the vehicle has sufficiently cooled down. If it hasn't sufficiently cooled, increase the air pressure in the tires approximately 3-4psi (20-30kPa)
NOTE: Initialization can be terminated by connecting terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3. See Fig 1.

During initialization, the tire pressure sensor measures the inflation pressure of the tires, and registers the signals that are transmitted into the tire pressure monitor ECU at a frequency of one per minute. The initialization process is completed when the signals from the 4 tires have been received.

The initialization process is canceled if the ignition switch is turned to OFF position prior to the completion of initialization. To restart initialization, the tire pressure warning reset switch must be pressed again.

  1. Set the tire pressure of all wheels to pressure specified on the tire and loading information label.
  2. Turn ignition switch to the ON position.
    • 2007-17:  Within 30 seconds of turning the ignition ON, press and hold the tire pressure warning reset switch until the tire pressure warning light blinks 3 times at one-second intervals. See Fig 2Fig 3
NOTE: Wait 2-3 minutes, with the ignition ON, for the initialization process to complete. If the initialization has not been completed successfully, DTC C2177/77 is set about 20 minutes after driving starts.
    • 2018 & Later:  Using the steering pad switch assembly select "Set Pressure" on the multi-information display and press and hold the "OK" button (center) until the tire pressure warning light blinks 3 times.
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch ON, and turn the Techstream ON.
  5. Enter the following menus: Chassis / Tire Pressure Monitor / Data List.
  6. Confirm that the expected tire pressure data of all tires is displayed on the Techstream screen.
