DTC P0116: Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range / Performance Problem [08/2013 - ]: Procedure

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0116) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
    5. Read DTCs.
      RESULT

      Result Proceed To
      P0116 is output A
      P0116 and other DTCs are output B

      HINT: 

      If any DTCs and other than P0116 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    B → See step   4 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. INSPECT WATER INLET WITH THERMOSTAT 
    1. Remove the water inlet with thermostat. Refer to REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] .
    2. Check the valve opening temperature of the thermostat. Refer to INSPECTION [08/2013 - ] .

      Standard opening temperature

      80°C to 84°C (176°F to 183°F)

      HINT: 

      • In addition to the above check, confirm that the valve is completely closed when the temperature is below the standard.
      • Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the engine coolant temperature sensor. Refer to INITIALIZATION [08/2013 - ] .

    NG → See step   5 

    OK → See step   3 

  3. REPLACE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR. Refer to  REMOVAL [08/2013 - ] 
  4. GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [08/2013 - ] 
  5. REPLACE WATER INLET WITH THERMOSTAT. Refer to  REMOVAL [08/2013 - ]
