Electronic Power Steering Motor Removal And Installation/Replacement

Mobile Repair Possible:  No

Special Tools Required: 

Tension Meter - No part number

Removal Procedure: 

Check EPC to ensure the power pack is available as a service part in your region before starting work. The steering gear should be placed in a clean and tidy location to avoid foreign objects entering the steering gear after disassembly and replacement. 

  1. Remove steering gear. Refer to STEERING GEAR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT

  2. Rotate the input shaft (1) to center the steering gear, refer to the left and right pull rod dust cover. The lengths are the same, and the green marking (2) lines on the input shaft should be coincident.
  3. Before dismantling, the centering operation of the rack must be marked with a line (refer to the factory marking) to prevent the inconsistency of the left and right angles of the steering wheel after loading.

    Removal note: Do not pull the connectors out violently, it will be damage and DTC occurred 

  4. Make sure that the connectors are in good condition.
  5. Pull the red buckle (1) outward in the direction of the arrow.
  6. Press the black terminal (2) in the middle and pull out to unlock and disconnect the electrical connectors (3).

  7. Remove 5 bolts (1).

    Torque: 20 Nm

    Removal note: Make sure that there are no foreign objects entering the steering gear after disassembly and replacement. 

  8. Disassemble the power pack (1) from the steering gearbox housing.

    Removal note: Do not enter foreign substances into the product, otherwise abnormal noise will occur. 

  9. Remove 3 bolts (1).

    Torque: 15 Nm 

  10. Disassemble the power pack (2) from the steering gear (3).

    Tension meter settings:

  11. Use sonic wave tensiometer to measure belt tension and adjust to standard range.

  12. Press the "power button" (1) and turn on the tensiometer.

  13. Press the button "0" (1).

  14. Press the button "MASS" (1).

  15. Enter "1.4" in the "MASS" column.

    Enter in sequence → 0 → 0 → 1 → 4

  16. Press the button "WIDTH" menu and enter "28".

    Enter in sequence → 0 → 2 → 8 → 0

  17. Press the button "SPAN" and enter "85".

    Enter the sequence → 0 → 0 → 8 → 5

  18. Press the button "MEASURE" to perform tension detection.

Installation Procedure:

Installation note: Do not miss the O-ring (1) from the motor, or it will cause water rust. 

  1. Assemble the original o-ring (1) to the new motor.

    Installation note: Keep the assembly location clean. 

  2. Pull on the belt (1) and assemble the motor (2) in.

    Installation note: Do not enter foreign substances into the product, otherwise abnormal noise will occur. Do not miss the O-ring from the motor, or it will cause water rust. 

  3. Install 3 bolts (1).

    Torque: 15 Nm

  4. Leave enough space for the belt part (1).
  5. Set the tension meter according to Step  11.

  6. Place the MIC at the position shown in the figure for measurement, about 2cm away from the belt and pulley.

    Do not measure label position. 

  7. Use a Hexagonal Wrench to tap the middle of the belt, after the tension meter displays the value, tap it again, and operate it continuously for 3 times.

    Adjust the measure belt tension to a range of 100 - 140 Nm.

  8. Change the belt position 4 times and repeat the above steps.

    Take the average value of single point measurement 3 times, if all 4 positions meet the standard, then the tension is ok.

  9. If one of the four positions do not meet the requirements, adjust the motor (1) and perform the measurement again.

    Rotary the motor (1) in the direction of the arrow if you need = Tension or = Tension reduction. If the standard is meet, it is ok.

  10. Reassemble the steering gearbox housing (1).

  11. Install 5 bolts (1) in sequence.

    Torque: 20 Nm

  12. Reconnect the electrical connectors (1) and pull the red buckle (2) in.
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure, noting the following.

    All fasteners must be tightened to torque specification! 

  14. Install steering gear. Refer to STEERING GEAR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT 
  15. Perform steering angle. Diagnostics, Programming and Setup. Refer to DIAGNOSTICS, PROGRAMMING AND SETUP USING SCAN TOOL IN SERVICE
