eMotor (FWD) Removal And Installation/Replacement

Mobile Repair Possible:  No

Special Tools Required: 

Transmission/eMotor support stand

Spring Band Hose Clamp Pliers - 51012018 (or equivalent)

In some Service Instructions, the coolant hoses are shown with a ring pull (1). 

This ring pull (1) is only present on a new hose and must be removed after the coolant hose has been installed. 

The coolant hoses installed in the vehicle have only spring band clamps (2). 

WARNING: Electricity hazard 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in death or serious injury from electric shock when working on or near high-voltage components.
  • Only authorised and appropriately trained persons may carry out work on high-voltage vehicles and components.
  • Perform High Voltage isolation procedure prior to commencing work
  • Ensure appropriate Personal Protective Equipment is worn until the system is verified safe
WARNING: Overhead Suspended Load and Falling Parts 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in death or serious injury when elevated load or components are incorrectly secured/supported.
  • All lifting equipment weight rating must meet or exceed the weight of the vehicle and any contents
  • The lifting equipment must be in good condition and approved for use
  • Only lift the vehicle from the identified lift points
  • Ensure vehicle is stable before performing any work underneath
  • Ensure there are no loose components which may fall
  • Always use personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Seek assistance when handling larger components
WARNING: Crushing by moving parts 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in death or serious injury due to the transmission/eMotor jack stand or eMotor.
  • Secure the component against uncontrolled movement.
  • Always use personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Ensure vehicle is correctly disabled/powered down to prevent unexpected motion or activation of components.
  • Do not raise the table to the point that it begins to lift the vehicle as this will cause damage to the HV battery casing.
  • Ensure that the lift table is positioned in a central location under the battery to prevent tipping once the battery is removed from the vehicle.

Removal Procedure: 

  1. Remove PDU EMI filter. Refer PDU EMI FILTER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT (US/CA)
  2. Remove hv coolant eHeater. Refer to HV COOLANT EHEATER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  3. Remove front wheel drive shaft (left side). Refer to FRONT WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT (LEFT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  4. Remove front intermediate drive shaft. Refer to FRONT INTERMEDIATE DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT

  5. Unlock and disconnect the high voltage electrical connector (1) from the PDU.
  6. Unclip the high voltage electrical connector (2).

    Air Conditioning Compressor (VN - R134a) 

    Removal note: For better illustration the removal for the air conditioning compressor is shown with the pipes removed. 

  7. Unlock and disconnect electrical connector (1).
  8. Unlock and disconnect the high voltage electrical connector (2).

    Air Conditioning Compressor (VN - R134a) 

    Removal note: For better illustration the removal for the air conditioning compressor is shown with the pipes removed. 

  9. Remove 3 bolts.

    Torque: 28 Nm 

  10. Remove air conditioning compressor (2) and hang it to the side with a suitable wire or hook. Do not stretch the pipes.

    Air Conditioning Compressor (US/Europe - R1234yf) 

    Removal note: For better illustration the removal for the air conditioning compressor is shown with the pipes removed. 

  11. Unlock and disconnect electrical connector (1).
  12. Unlock and disconnect the high voltage electrical connector (2).

    Air Conditioning Compressor (US/Europe - R1234yf) 

    Removal note: For better illustration the removal for the air conditioning compressor is shown with the pipes removed. 

  13. Remove 4 bolts.

    Torque: 28 Nm 

  14. Remove air conditioning compressor (2) and hang it to the side with a suitable wire or hook. Do not stretch the pipes.

  15. Unlock and disconnect the electrical connector (1) from the electric park actuator.

  16. Loosen clamp (1) from the eMotor outlet hose.
  17. Remove eMotor outlet Hose and move it aside.
    NOTE: Environmental Risk 
    • Collect and dispose of leaking liquids.
    • Observe country-specific disposal regulations.

  18. Loosen clamp (1) from the eMotor inlet hose.
  19. Remove eMotor inlet Hose and move it aside.
    NOTE: Environmental Risk 
    • Collect and dispose of leaking liquids.
    • Observe country-specific disposal regulations.

    Removal note: Support the eMotor Assembly with a Transmission/eMotor jack stand.

  20. Remove nut (1).

    Torque: 100 Nm 

  21. Remove 2 bolts (2).

    Torque: 100 Nm

  22. Remove nut (1).

    Torque: 100 Nm 

  23. Remove 2 bolts (2).

    Torque: 100 Nm

    Removal note: For better illustration the removal for the eMotor is shown on the basis of the VF34 

  24. Carefully lower the transmission/eMotor jack stand until the electrical connector (1) is accessible.
  25. Unlock and disconnect the electrical connector (1) from the electric controller.
  26. Remove the eMotor from the engine compartment.

Replacement Procedure: 

  1. Rebuild the eMotor (FWD) mount bracket (left side). Refer to EMOTOR (FWD) MOUNT BRACKET (LEFT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT 
  2. Rebuild the eMotor (FWD) mount bracket (right side). Refer to EMOTOR (FWD) MOUNT BRACKET (RIGHT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT 
  3. Rebuild the eMotor (FWD) mount bracket (center). Refer to EMOTOR (FWD) MOUNT BRACKET (CENTER) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT 

Installation Procedure:

Installation note: Use the spring band hose clamp pliers to push the hose on. If replacing with a new hose, you will remove the ring pull (1) to release the clamp. Refer to Picture VF-35-02-663 Make sure that the spring band clamp is aligned inside the marking on the hose.  Refer to HOSE CLAMP REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT GUIDELINES - SPRING TYPE

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure, noting the following.

    All fasteners must be tightened to torque specification! 

  2. Install front intermediate drive shaft. Refer to FRONT INTERMEDIATE DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  3. Install front wheel drive shaft (left side). Refer to FRONT WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT (LEFT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  4. Install sub frame engine cradle. Refer to FRONT SUB FRAME ENGINE CRADLE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  5. Install hv coolant eHeater. Refer to HV COOLANT EHEATER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  6. Install PDU EMI filter. Refer PDU EMI FILTER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT (US/CA)
  7. Program the eMotor as per procedure. Refer to DIAGNOSTICS, PROGRAMMING AND SETUP USING SCAN TOOL IN SERVICE
