eMotor (RWD) Removal And Installation/Replacement

Mobile Repair Possible:  No

Special Tools Required: 

Lifting Table

Lifting rolling gantry

WARNING: Electricity hazard 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in death or serious injury from electric shock when working on or near high-voltage components.
  • Only authorised and appropriately trained persons may carry out work on high-voltage vehicles and components.
  • Perform High Voltage isolation procedure prior to commencing work
  • Ensure appropriate Personal Protective Equipment is worn until the system is verified safe
WARNING: Overhead Suspended Load and Falling Parts 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in death or serious injury when elevated load or components are incorrectly secured/supported.
  • All lifting equipment weight rating must meet or exceed the weight of the vehicle and any contents
  • The lifting equipment must be in good condition and approved for use
  • Only lift the vehicle from the identified lift points
  • Ensure vehicle is stable before performing any work underneath
  • Ensure there are no loose components which may fall
  • Always use personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Seek assistance when handling larger components
WARNING: Crushing by moving parts 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in death or serious injury due to the transmission/eMotor jack stand or eMotor.
  • Secure the component against uncontrolled movement.
  • Always use personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Ensure vehicle is correctly disabled/powered down to prevent unexpected motion or activation of components.
  • Do not raise the table to the point that it begins to lift the vehicle as this will cause damage to the HV battery casing.
  • Ensure that the lift table is positioned in a central location under the battery to prevent tipping once the battery is removed from the vehicle.

Removal Procedure: 

  1. Remove rear subframe. Refer to REAR SUBFRAME REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  2. Remove rear intermediate drive shaft. Refer to REAR INTERMEDIATE DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  3. Remove rear wheel drive shaft (right side). Refer to REAR WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT (RIGHT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT

  4. To remove the eMotor from the lifting table, attach a lifting harness to the eMotor to the points (1) shown at the picture.

  5. Remove and discard the torque prevailing bolt (1).

    Replace with new only 

    Torque - First Pass: 88 Nm

  6. Remove and discard the torque prevailing bolt (1).

    Replace with new only 

    Torque - First Pass: 88 Nm

  7. Remove and discard the torque prevailing bolt (2).

    Replace with new only 

    Torque - First Pass: 186 Nm

  8. Connect the lifting harness to a rolling gantry and proceed to lift the eMotor (1) from the subframe.

Replacement Procedure: 

  1. For information regarding storage and shipping of the eMotor. Refer to EMOTOR SHIPPING PREPARATION 
  2. Rebuild the eMotor (RWD) mount bracket (left side). Refer to EMOTOR (FWD) MOUNT BRACKET (LEFT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT 
  3. Rebuild the eMotor (RWD) mount bracket (right side). Refer to EMOTOR (FWD) MOUNT BRACKET (RIGHT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT 
  4. Rebuild the eMotor (RWD) mount bracket (center). Refer to EMOTOR (FWD) MOUNT BRACKET (CENTER) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT 
  5. Rebuild rear eMotor ground harness. Refer to EMOTOR GROUND HARNESS REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  6. Rebuild rear eMotor outlet hose. Refer to REAR EMOTOR OUTLET HOSE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  7. Rebuild rear eMotor inlet hose. Refer to REAR EMOTOR INLET HOSE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT

Installation Procedure: 

NOTE: Safety-relevant procedure step 
Failure to discard the specified component(s) may cause damage to the vehicle or vehicle components.
  • Fasteners highlighted as torque prevailing must be discarded and not re-used
  • Replace with new bolts only.
  1. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure, noting the following.

    All fasteners must be tightened to torque specification! 

  2. Install rear wheel drive shaft (right side). Refer to REAR WHEEL DRIVE SHAFT (RIGHT SIDE) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  3. Install rear intermediate drive shaft. Refer to REAR INTERMEDIATE DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  4. Install rear subframe. Refer to REAR SUBFRAME REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
  5. Program the eMotor as per procedure. Refer to DIAGNOSTICS, PROGRAMMING AND SETUP USING SCAN TOOL IN SERVICE
