DESCRIPTION

As stated in RTJ 16761, a Transmission Control Module (TCM) Upgrade is required anytime a transmission in a 2003 - 2005 XC90 T6 is replaced or repaired, or if a customer has a transmission-related complaint.

If the technician is following the fault tracing for certain TCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), for example 002A, 002B, 0028, or 0029, VIDA may request that the tech clicks on the VCT2000 symbol in order to check for the latest software. The technician is then directed to read the Diagnostic Software Number (see photo below) and match it with the list of Diagnostic Software Numbers in the table.

With the currently supported versions of VIDA, it is possible that the Diagnostic Software Number that is read out does not match any of the Diagnostic Software Numbers in the table (indicating that the vehicle already has the latest TCM software) meanwhile the vehicle does not actually have the latest software.

SERVICE

There are three ways to accurately check if the TCM has the latest software.

  1. Using the SOFTWARE tab in VIDA, try to purchase a TCM Upgrade. If the TCM does not have the latest software, the technician will  be able to purchase the upgrade.
  2. Using the DIAGNOSTICS tab in VIDA, select NETWORK. Click on TCM and read the Software numbers under ECU identification. If neither of 31286775 or 31286776 shows up as the Software number, then the vehicle does not have the latest software and, therefore, a TCM Upgrade is required. See note 1 in the photo below for an example of a vehicle that does have the latest TCM software.

  3. The third way can be done without having the vehicle hooked up to VIDA. After profiling the vehicle using complete VIN or using the chassis number and model, hit OK on the VEHICLE PROFILE screen, and select the VEHICLE DETAILS in the top left corner of the screen. Once the VEHICLE DETAILS window opens, select HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE and scroll down to TCM. Expand the TCM section by clicking on the "+" sign. If neither of 31286775 or 31286776 shows up as the Software Part No, then the vehicle does not have the latest software and a TCM Upgrade is required. See note 1 in the photo below for an example of a vehicle that does have the latest TCM software.
