Starter Motor: Service and Repair




Starter Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).

Warning: Refer to Safety Glasses Warning Safety Glasses Warning.


2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

3. Remove the right catalytic converter from the vehicle. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Right Side Catalytic Converter Replacement - Right Side.




4. Remove the starter motor heat shield to starter motor retaining bolts (1).

5. Remove the heat shield (2) from the vehicle.




6. Remove the torque converter cover bolt (1).

7. Remove the starter mounting bolts (2).

8. Reposition the starter to access electrical connections.




9. Disconnect the engine harness connector (1).

10. Remove the battery positive cable nut (2) and remove the battery positive cable (3), from the starter (4).

11. Maneuver the starter motor (4) and the torque converter cover, out and down between the transmission bell housing and body sub frame.

Installation Procedure




1. Install the engine wiring harness connector (4) to the starter motor.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

2. Install the battery positive cable terminal (3) to the starter solenoid and tighten the nut (2) to 10 Nm (89 lb in).




3. Install the starter motor with the torque converter cover and tighten the mounting bolts (2) to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).

4. Install the torque converter cover bolt (1) and tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb in).




5. Install the heat shield (2) to the vehicle.

6. Install the heat shield to starter motor retaining bolts (1) and tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb in).

7. Install the right catalytic converter to the vehicle. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Right Side Catalytic Converter Replacement - Right Side.

8. Lower the vehicle.

9. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).
