SERVICE ACTION 148 - CODING OF EWS II CONTROL MODULES
SERVICE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN
| BMW: | All Models with Automatic Transmission, produced 1/95 through 6/95 |
| GROUP: | 61 - General Electrical System |
SUBJECT
Coding of Replacement Electronic Immobilization (EWS II) Control Modules
SITUATION
Warranty data indicate that Electronic Immobilization (EWS II) Control Modules were replaced by dealers on certain US vehicles equipped with automatic transmission form January 1995 through June 1995. The EWS II Control Module must be encoded following a replacement, in addition to being aligned with the DME Control Module.
As part of on-going quality control monitoring, BMW of NA, Inc. is conducting this Service Action to verify the proper coding of these replacement Control Modules.
Information concerning the required coding of these replacement Control Modules has been published in Technical Reference Bulletin 61 01 95 (2144) .
This Service Information bulletin outlines specific procedures for the implementation of this campaign.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
Vehicles equipped with automatic transmission which have had a replacement EWS II Control Module installed before July 1995.
These vehicles are listed by model and VIN in the attachment to this bulletin.
These vehicles can also be identified through DCS inquiry.
PROCEDURE
- Check the coding of the EWS II Control Module by selecting EWS in Diagnosis (MoDiC Diagnosis V. 15.0 or DIS V. 4.0, or later), then "Service Functions", then "Coding Data". The display will list "Type of Gearbox: Automatic", if the EWS II Control Module has been properly encoded.
- If this is not displayed, the EWS II Control Module has not been properly encoded. Recode the module using MoDiC or DIS Coding Software V. 13.0 or later.
IMPORTANT: If difficulties are encountered when coding the EWS II Control Module in an E36 vehicle using Coding Program "ZCS V 14.0", or when aligning EWS II and DME in an E36 vehicle using "Programming 6.0 A/B", refer to the following S.I. Bulletins:
- 61 06 95 (4283) - Coding Program "ZCS V 14.0"
- 61 07 95 (4287) - Alignment of EWS II and DME Control Modules
SERVICE ACTION LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action is assigned code number 148. After the vehicle is checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD-92-050) and:
- Emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
- Punch out code number 148 printed on the label (2) and affix the label to the B pillar as shown in Fig 1.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided by Claim Entry.
