Steering Column Tilt/Telescoping Inoperative

NOTE: This procedure applies to steering column that does not move up, down, in or out.
  1. If power tilt/telescoping steering column diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If power tilt/telescoping steering column diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to POWER TILT/TELESCOPING STEERING COLUMN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select TILT/TELESCOPE MODULE data list. Monitor TELESCOPE/TILT SWITCH parameter while operating tilt/telescoping switch to up, down, in, and out positions. If TELESCOPE/TILT SWITCH parameter changes as switch is operated, go to next step. If TELESCOPE/TILT SWITCH parameter does not change as switch is operated, go to step  9 .
  3. Check PWR T&T fuse (30-amp) located in rear fuse block. See Figure . If PWR T&T fuse is okay, go to next step. If PWR T&T fuse is blown, go to step  6 .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Steering Column Tilt/Telescoping Module (SCCM) connector C1. Check for open or high resistance in Orange wires between SCCM connector C1 terminals "D" and "E" and rear fuse block. If circuits are okay, go to next step. If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  15 .
  5. Check for open or high resistance in Black wire between SCCM connector C1 terminal "C" and ground G200 located behind driver's side kick panel. If circuit is okay, go to step  13 . If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  15 .
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Steering Column Tilt/Telescoping Module (SCCM) connector C1. Check for short to ground in Orange wire between SCCM connector C1 terminal "D" and rear fuse block. If circuits are okay, go to next step. If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  15 .
  7. Disconnect SCCM connector C1. Replace PWR T&T fuse. Reconnect suspect actuator. Operate power tilt and telescoping switch to all positions. If PWR T&T fuse does not blow, go to next step. If PWR T&T fuse blows, go to step  11 .
  8. Operate power tilt and telescoping switch to all positions. If PWR T&T fuse does not blow, go to step  10 . If PWR T&T fuse blows, go to step  11 .
  9. Check for poor connections at SCCM connector C4. If connections are okay, go to step  12 . If faulty connections are found and repaired, go to step  15 .
  10. Check for poor connections at SCCM connector C2 or C3. If connections are okay, go to step  13 . If faulty connections are found and repaired, go to step  15 .
  11. Check for poor connections at SCCM connector C1. If connections are okay, go to step  14 . If faulty connections are found and repaired, go to step  15 .
  12. Replace tilt/telescoping steering column switch. See STEERING COLUMN TILT/TELESCOPING SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step  15 .
  13. Replace suspect tilt/telescoping actuator. See STEERING COLUMN MOTORS & SENSORS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step  15 .
  14. Replace SCCM. See STEERING COLUMN TILT/TELESCOPING MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  15. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Recheck operation of tilt/telescoping steering column. Recheck for DTC. If DTC resets, go to step  2 . If DTC does not reset, repair is complete.
