Spark Plug: Installation

  1. Replace the spark plugs every 90,000 mi (144,000 km).
  2. Set the spark plug gap. Bend only the side electrode if necessary. See SPARK PLUG TYPE  and SPARK PLUG SPECIFICATIONS  tables.

    SPARK PLUG SPECIFICATIONS

    1.8L Except HO (1) .040-.051 (1.02-1.30) 13 (18)
    1.8L HO (2) .040-.043 (1.02-1.10) 18 (25)
    (1) Maximum used spark plug gap - 0.051 in. (1.3 mm).
    (2) Maximum used spark plug gap - 0.047 in. (1.2 mm).
  3. Install spark plugs. Tighten spark plugs as specified. See SPARK PLUG SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  4. Install ignition coils (3). See Figure .
  5. Install ignition coil bolts (4). Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. Connect ignition coil harness connectors (1). See Figure .
  7. Install engine cover (1). See Figure .
  8. Install engine cover (1) bolts. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
