Steering Column: Column: Installation
WARNING:
Before servicing the steering column the AIRBAG system must be disarmed. Refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS
For Service Procedures. Failure to do so may result in accidental deployment of the AIRBAG and possible personal injury.
CAUTION:
All fasteners must be torqued to specification to ensure proper operation of the steering column.
- Install switches, clockspring and key cylinder, (Refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS ) & (Refer to LOCK CYLINDER ).
- Position the column to the panel bracket and attaching studs. Install, but loose assemble the mounting nuts.
- Firmly slide steering column upward against the studs in dash panel and hand tighten the nuts.
- Install steering shaft coupler on the steering shaft and install a NEW
bolt.NOTE: Torque the upper left nut first then the lower right nut. Then torque the lower left nut then the upper right nut.
- Tighten column mounting nuts to 28 N.m (250 in. lbs.).CAUTION: Ensure that the shift lever is in the PARK position and snap the shift cable adjustment clip in place.
- Install shift cable.
- Connect the multi-function switch wiring and tighten to 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.)
- Install the wiring connections to the column switches.
- Install the lower and upper shrouds.
- Install the tilt lever handle (if equipped).
- Install the knee blocker and steering column opening cover. (Figure).
- Install steering wheel by aligning the D flat on the wheel to the D flat on the column also use a new bolt and tighten the bolt to 61 N.m (45 ft. lbs.).
- Install AIRBAG. (Refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS ).
- Connect the battery ground (negative) cable.
- Check operation of the automatic transmission shift linkage and adjust as necessary.
- Test the operation of the horn, lights and any other functions that are steering column operated.
