Test C: Power Locks

CAUTION: Perform test ONLY if instructed to do so.
NOTE: This section contains a number of sub-sections for handling different types of problems found with the remote entry system reported by the customer. Find the specific problem in the list below, and go the step specified unless otherwise directed from a referencing test procedure. See TEST C SYMPTOM INDEX  table.

  1. Check fuse "A" (60 amp) and fuse No. 8 (16 amp). If fuses are okay, go to next step. If fuses are damaged or overloaded, replace fuses and retest system. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  2. Disconnect remote entry module connector. Check voltages between connector terminals No. 6 and 18 (Yellow/Black wires) and ground. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If more than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If less than 10 volts exists, repair open in Yellow/Black wire between remote entry module connector and fuse "A" (60 amp). Reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  3. Reconnect remote entry module connector. Press and hold the lock and unlock switches for approximately 15 seconds each. Check fuse "A" (60 amp). If the fuse is okay, go to next step. If the fuse is blown, check for short to ground in Red/Orange, Pink/Black, Pink/Orange, Yellow/Black, and White wires or a shorted lock actuator. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . When repairs are complete, reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  4. Disconnect remote entry module connector. Check continuity between connector terminals No 20 and 21 (Black wires) and ground. Check continuity between connector terminal No. 23 (Black/White wire) and ground. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If continuity exists for all terminals, go to next step. If there is no continuity between terminals No. 20 or 21 and ground, repair open Black wire between remote entry module connector and ground. If continuity does not exist between terminal No. 23 and ground, then repair open in Black/White wire between remote entry module connector and ground. Reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  5. Manually lock all doors. Connect a jumper between ground and remote entry module connector terminals No. 2 and 16 (Pink/Black wires), and No. 3 (Yellow/Black wire), with the connector disconnected. With a second jumper, momentarily connect together terminals No. 6, 18 (Yellow/Black wires), terminals No. 4, 5 (Pink/Orange wire) and No. 1 (White wire). See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . The passenger doors should unlock. Momentarily connect together terminals No. 6, 18 (Yellow/Black wires) and terminal No. 15 (Red/Orange wire). The driver's door should now unlock. If all doors operate as specified, go to next step. If only the driver's door unlocks, repair Pink/Black, Pink/Orange and White wires between remote entry module connector and passenger door actuators. Reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  . If only the passenger doors unlock, repair the Pink/Black and Red/Orange wires. Reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  6. Test for lock switch stuck in LOCK or UNLOCK position. If switches are okay, go to next step. Replace switches if stuck. See POWER DOOR LOCK SYSTEM -- BRONCO, ECONOLINE & PICKUP article. When repairs are complete, reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  7. Ensure remote entry module is disconnected. Measure the continuity between remote entry module connector terminals No. 25 (Pink/Yellow wire) and No. 24 (Pink/Light green wire). See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short between Pink/Yellow and Pink/Light green wires. When repairs are complete, reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  8. Ensure remote entry module is disconnected. Check for short to ground for remote entry module connector terminals No. 25 (Pink/Yellow wire) and No. 24 (Pink/Light green wire). See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair short to ground and retest system. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  . If there is no short to ground, replace remote entry module. See REMOTE ENTRY MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reperform quick test, see TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  9. Manually cycle the faulty lock actuator several times to check for latch or linkage binding. If the locks bind, lubricate and retest system. See POWER DOOR LOCK SYSTEM -- BRONCO, ECONOLINE & PICKUP article. If locks do not bind, go to next step.
  10. Remove trim panel on the door. See POWER DOOR LOCK SYSTEM -- BRONCO, ECONOLINE & PICKUP article. Check voltage between the faulty lock actuator and ground while pressing the lock of the door switch. if measured voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step  12 . If measured voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
  11. With remote entry module connector connected, press lock button and measure voltage at remote entry module connector terminals No. 2 and 16 (Pink/Black wires), and No. 3 (Yellow/Black wire). Measure the voltage at remote entry module connector terminals No. 4 and 5 (Pink/Orange wires), No. 1 (White wire) and No. 15 (Red/Orange wire), while the lock button is depressed. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If measured voltage is 9 volts or more at terminals No. 2, 16 and 3 when depressed and less than 0.1 volts when released. Repair open in faulty circuit. If measured voltage is under 9 volts at terminals No. 2, 16 and 3 when depressed, replace remote entry module. See REMOTE ENTRY MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reperform quick test, see TEST A: QUICK TEST  . If there is more 9 volts on any terminal when switch is not depressed, replace remote entry module. See REMOTE ENTRY MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reperform quick test, see TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  12. Check voltage between the lock actuator input circuit (Pink/Orange wire) and ground while pressing the UNLOCK position of the door switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If measured voltage is 10 volts or more, replace the actuator. See POWER DOOR LOCK SYSTEM -- BRONCO, ECONOLINE & PICKUP article. If measured voltage is under 10 volts, repair open or short in affected circuit. When repair are complete, reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  13. Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Disconnect electronic remote entry module connector. Remove trim panel of the door with the faulty switch. See POWER DOOR LOCK SYSTEM -- BRONCO, ECONOLINE & PICKUP article. Check continuity between remote entry module connector terminal No. 24 (Pink/Light Green wire) and door switch. Check continuity between remote entry module connector terminal No. 25 (Pink/Yellow wire) and door switch. Check continuity between door switch and ground. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If continuity exists for all circuits, replace door switch. See POWER DOOR LOCK SYSTEM -- BRONCO, ECONOLINE & PICKUP article. If no continuity exists, repair circuits which are faulty and reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  14. Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Disconnect electronic remote entry module connector. Check for continuity between connector terminals No. 20 and 21 (Black wires) and ground. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Check for battery voltage between terminal No. 25, Pink/Yellow wire (terminal No. 24, Pink/Light Green wire, if doors won't unlock) of connector and ground while pressing the lock (unlock) position of one of the door switches.
    • If continuity exists and voltages are correct for all measured circuits, go to next step.
    • If there is an open circuit at terminal No. 24 or 25, then go to step  16 .
    If there is an open circuit at terminals No. 20 and 21, repair Black wire. When repair is complete, reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  15. For lock circuit, check voltage between remote entry module connector terminals No. 2 and 16 (Pink/Black wires) and ground while pressing the LOCK position of one of the door switches. For unlock circuit, check voltage between ground and remote entry module connector terminals No. 4 and 5 (Pink/Orange wires), terminal No. 1 (White wire) and terminal No. 15 (Red/Orange wire) while pressing the UNLOCK position of one of the door switches. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If the measured voltage is more than 10 volts, repair open or short in affected circuit. If measured voltages is less than 10 volts, replace electronic remote entry module. See REMOTE ENTRY MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reperform quick test, see TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  16. For lock circuit, check voltage between ground and door switch Pink/Yellow wire while pressing the LOCK position of the switch. For unlock circuit, check voltage between ground and door switch Pink/Light Green wire while pressing the UNLOCK position of the switch. If voltage exists, repair open between Pink/Yellow wire (Pink/Light Green wire for unlock faults) and remote entry module. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If there is no voltage, and battery voltage is present at Light Green/Yellow wire, replace the door switch. See POWER DOOR LOCK SYSTEM -- BRONCO, ECONOLINE & PICKUP article. Repair circuits which are faulty and reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  17. Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Disconnect electronic remote entry module connector. Check continuity between remote entry module connector terminals No. 20 and 21 (Black wires) and ground. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If continuity exists, inspect connector for loose or corroded terminals, repair as necessary. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between remote entry module and ground. When repairs are complete, reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  18. Bring vehicle into heated garage to thaw. Lubricate locks, see POWER DOOR LOCK SYSTEM -- BRONCO, ECONOLINE & PICKUP article. Reperform quick test, see TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
  19. Double check the following:
    • Battery charged
    • Any latch or linkage binding
    • Loose or corroded connections to actuators, switches, remote entry module connectors.
    Reperform quick test. See TEST A: QUICK TEST  .
