General Disabling Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mercury Monterey and 2004 Ford Freestar. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
This procedure should only be used when removing and installing air bag system components or when necessary to deactivate the system to facilitate other maintenance.
- Record pre-set radio frequencies for reprogramming, if equipped. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy.
- Open steering wheel access door, located on back of steering wheel. Release tab and slide driver-side air bag electrical connector off. Push driver-side air bag electrical connector together. Push down, pivot electrical connector, release electrical connector retainer and disconnect connector. Install Air Bag Simulator (418-F403) on harness side of electrical connector (in place of air bag). See AIR BAG SIMULATOR .
- Open glove box, push in on glove box door tabs, and position glove box in downward position. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module harness connector. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F403) on passenger-side air bag vehicle harness connector (in place of air bag).CAUTION: Removing side curtain air bag bridge resistor can cause low resistance fault. AIR BAG warning light illumination and erroneous Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will result. Some models are not equipped with side curtain air bags. Side curtain air bag bridge resistors are installed in place of side curtain air bags on these models. Do not remove side curtain air bag bridge resistors unless directed.NOTE: Models equipped with side curtain and side air bags will have the word "AIRBAG" embossed in headliner, near each B-pillar, and on outboard side of front seat back trim.
- On models equipped with side curtain and side air bags, remove right rear seat belt guide cover, bolt and seat belt guide. Remove appropriate screws and attachments on right quarter trim panel. Remove weatherstrip, separate right quarter trim panel from D-pillar trim panel and remove D-pillar trim panel. Disconnect right side curtain air bag electrical connector. Install Air Bag Simulator (418-F403) on harness side of right side curtain air bag connector.
- Slide and disengage right side air bag electrical connector locking clip. See Figure . Push in to release tab and disconnect right side air bag electrical connector. Install Air Bag Simulator (418-133) on harness side of right side air bag connector. On all models, disconnect right seat belt pretensioner electrical connector. Install Air Bag Simulator (501-097) on harness side of right seat belt pretensioner electrical connector.
- On models equipped with side curtain and side air bags, remove second row left seat belt guide cover, bolt and seat belt guide. Remove weatherstrip, separate left quarter trim panel from C-pillar trim panel and remove C-pillar trim panel. From between headliner and roof of vehicle, disconnect left side curtain air bag module electrical connector, located just front of C-pillar. Install Air Bag Simulator (418-F403) on harness side of left side curtain air bag connector.
- Connect negative battery cable. With air bag simulators installed at all deployable air bag system devices, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . Disconnect negative battery cable.
