WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Mercury Mountaineer, 2000 Ford Explorer, 1999 Mercury Mountaineer, and 1999 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation involving steering column components. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Do not apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.
CAUTION: Disconnect battery before disconnecting Generic Electronic Module (GEM) or Central Timer Module (CTM) connectors. Failure to do so will result in GEM/CTM storing erroneous codes and may also result in erratic operation of GEM/CTM after reconnecting. When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
