Test C: Restraints Control Module Does Not Respond To NGS Tester
WARNING:
Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation involving steering column components. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Do not apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy resulting in personal injury.
NOTE:
Air bag diagnostic monitor may be referred to as Restraints Control Module (RCM).
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Deactivate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS - RANGER article. Disconnect 26-pin Restraints Control Module (RCM) harness connector C2041 located behind left side of instrument panel. See Figure . Inspect RCM harness connector for physical damage, bent terminals or corrosion. Repair RCM harness connector as necessary and retest system for normal operation. If RCM harness connector is okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance in Light Blue/White wire between RCM harness connector C2041 terminal No. 5 and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 7. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Blue/White wire between RCM and DLC. Retest system for normal operation.
- Inspect RCM harness connector for physical damage, bent terminals or corrosion. Repair RCM harness connector as necessary. Reconnect RCM harness connector C2041. Retest system for normal operation. If problem still exists, replace RCM. Perform DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST . If problem no longer exists, system is okay at this time.
