Removal & Installation (FREESTAR & MONTEREY)

NOTE: Numbers in parenthesis refer to numbers shown in illustration.
  1. Before proceeding, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . Record radio preset frequencies for reprogramming (if equipped). Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute to deplete backup power supply energy.
  2. Remove the screws and the steering wheel back cover. See Fig 1. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the illustration and table. See Fig 2.

    Item 2 Removal Note

    1. Separate the driver air bag module from the steering wheel. See Fig 3. Push in on the spring clip (1). Release the spring clip from the tabs on the steering wheel and separate that side of the driver air bag module from the steering wheel (2). Push in on the spring clip (3). Release the spring clip from the tabs on the steering wheel and separate that side of the driver air bag module from the steering wheel (4).
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten air bag module bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Connect negative battery cable. Ensure system is functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . Reprogram radio preset frequencies and set clock.
