Anti-Lock Brake System: Description

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is designed to prevent wheel lock-up during hard braking, allowing driver to maintain vehicle control. System consists of ABS control unit, modulator unit, wheel sensors and ABS indicator light. Modulator unit contains inlet and outlet solenoid valves, reservoir, pump, pump motor and damping chamber. See Fig 1 or Fig 2 . Modulator unit is a 4-channel type with one channel for each wheel. Modulator can increase pressure, hold pressure or reduce pressure to individual wheels. Wheel sensors are magnetic contactless type sensors that generate AC voltage.

NOTE: For more information on brake system, see DISC & DRUM article in BRAKES.
