Generator Test

NOTE: Before starting test, ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure all fuses are in good condition
  1. Check fusible link. Replace if necessary. Turn ignition on. Observe charge warning light on instrument panel. If light illuminates, go to step 4). If light does not illuminate, go to next step.
NOTE: Terminals "S", "L", "B", and "E" are marked on generator rear cover. Terminal "F" is an internal terminal.
  2. Disconnect terminals "S" and "L". Using a fused jumper wire, ground terminal "L" at harness. If light does not illuminate, replace indicator bulb and repeat step 1). If light illuminates on Mitsubishi equipped models, check for damaged IC regulator or other generator parts. Repair or replace as necessary. If light illuminates on Hitachi equipped models, go to next step.
  3. Reconnect terminals "S" and "L". Using a brush lift wire, ground internal terminal "F". See Fig 1 . If light remains illuminated, replace IC regulator. If light is not illuminated, IC regulator is okay. Check remaining generator parts for damage. Repair or replace as necessary.
  4. Start engine and allow it to idle. If light glows dim, flickers or remains fully on (bright), go to step 6). If light is not illuminated, raise engine speed to 1500 RPM. Turn headlights on. Observe charge warning light. Go to next step.
  5. If light illuminates, IC regulator is okay. Check remaining generator parts for damage. Repair or replace as necessary. If light is not illuminated, ensure terminals "S" and "L" are properly connected. Using a DVOM, measure voltage at terminal "B" with engine speed at 1500 RPM. If reading is greater than 15.5 volts, replace IC regulator. If reading is 13-15 volts, system is okay.
  6. Turn engine off. Check drive belt tension. Adjust or replace as necessary. Recheck charge warning light with engine idling. If drive belt is okay or light remains the same after adjusting or replacing belt, IC regulator is okay. Check remaining generator parts for damage. Repair or replace as necessary. If light is not illuminated, system is okay.
