Pinion Housing Assembly

- Using Handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (2) and Installer (special tool #D-129, Installer, Bearing Cup) (1), press new
pinion head bearing cup (3) into pinion gear housing.
- Using Handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (1) and Installer (special tool #D-130, Installer, Bearing Cup) (2), press new pinion tail bearing cup into pinion gear housing.
- Using Installer (special tool #L-4507, Installer, Bearing), install new
pinion head bearing.
- Install pinion bearing select spacer (1) removed upon disassembly. Spacer thickness will be measured/verified at end of assembly.
- Install pinion gear/bearing assembly into pinion housing. Using Installer (special tool #L-4507, Installer, Bearing) (1), press new
pinion tail bearing (2) onto shaft.
- Using Installer (special tool #9677, Installer, Seal) (1), install new
pinion seal.
- Using Installer (special tool #L-4507, Installer, Bearing) (1), install pinion flange (2) until it bottoms.
- Using Spanner Wrench (special tool #6958, Wrench, Spanner) (2), install pinion flange nut and torque to 475 N.m (350 ft. lbs.).
- Measure pinion housing assembly rotating torque (1). Rotating torque should be within 130-260 N.m (12-23 in. lbs.).
- If rotating torque is lower than this range, disassemble pinion housing, measure and install a slightly thinner spacer (1), reassemble and re-verify. If rotating torque is higher than this range, disassemble pinion housing, install a slightly thicker spacer, reassemble and re-verify rotating torque.
- Select the pinion depth shim required for this axle assembly Refer to ADJUSTMENTS .
