Power Tilt And Power Telescopic Steering Column: Removal

  1. Precaution. See AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
  2. Disconnect battery negative terminal.
  3. Remove steering wheel pad.
    NOTE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON, DTCs will be recorded.
    1. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
    2. Remove the steering wheel lower No. 2 cover and pad switch modulator cover.
    3. Using a torx driver, loosen the 2 torx screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.

    4. Disconnect the connector.
    5. Pull out the wheel pad from the steering wheel.
    6. Using a screw driver, disconnect the airbag connectors as shown in Fig 2.

      CAUTION:
      • When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.
      • Never disassemble the wheel pad.
      NOTE: When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.
  4. Remove steering wheel.
    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
    3. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.

    4. Using SST, remove the steering wheel.
      1. SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)
  5. Remove No. 1 under cover.
    1. Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the No. 1 under cover.
    2. Disconnect the 2 connectors, DLC3 and remove the No. 1 under cover.
  6. Remove finish plate.
  7. Remove No. 1 safety pad.
    1. Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the engine hood release lever.
    2. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the No. 1 safety pad.
    3. Disconnect the connectors, clamps and remove the No. 1 safety pad.
  8. Remove column lower cover.
    1. Remove the 3 screws and column lower cover.
  9. Remove No. 5 heater to register duct.
    1. Remove the clip and No. 5 heater to register duct.
  10. With Smart key system: disconnect steering lock switch and actuator.
    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2. Remove the 3 bolts and disconnect the steering lock switch and actuator.
  11. Remove air sealed plate.
  12. Remove sliding yoke sub-assembly.
    1. Place matchmarks on the sliding yoke sub-assembly and control valve shaft.
    2. Remove the 2 bolts and sliding yoke sub-assembly.

  13. Remove steering column assembly.
    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2. Loosen the clamp.
    3. Disconnect the No. 2 column hole cover sub-assembly.
    4. Remove the return spring.
    5. Remove the 4 column assembly set nuts and steering column assembly.
    6. Remove the intermediate shaft dust cover.
  14. Remove column upper cover, combination switch and spiral cable.
    1. Remove the column upper cover.
    2. Remove the 2 screws and combination switch.
    3. Remove the spiral cable.
      NOTE: Do not disassemble the spiral cable or apply oil to it.
  15. Remove no. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.
    1. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and main shaft assembly.

    2. Remove the bolt and No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.
  16. Remove steering pad switch modulator.
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and disconnect the steering pad switch modulator.
