Draining & Refilling

Add automatic transmission fluid. See Fig 1:

  1. When adding a maximum amount of fluid (*1):
      NOTE: Keeping it level.
    1. Lift up the vehicle.
    2. Remove the refill plug and overflow plug. See Fig 2.
    3. CAUTION: Be sure to add ATF WS.
    4. Add ATF to the refill hole until it drains out from the overflow hole. See Fig 2.
    5. Install a gasket and overflow plug. Tighten overflow plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    6. CAUTION: Refill amount is different depending on the related procedures.
    7. Refill ATF to the refill hole. See FLUID CAPACITIES .
    8. Install a gasket and refill plug. Tighten refill plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    9. Lower down the vehicle.
    10. Using an SST, short-circuit between terminals TC and CG of the DLC3. SST (09843-18040). See Fig 3.
    11. NOTE: Turn the A/C off.
    12. Start the engine.
    13. Slowly move the shift lever from the "P" to the 2-L position. Return the shift lever to the "P" position.
    14. NOTE: Standard: Meter indicator lamp "ATF temperature warning lamp" comes on for 2 seconds and then goes off. See Fig 4.
    15. Switch to the fluid temperature detection mode:
      • Move the shift lever from the "N" to the 4D position, or from 4D to "N", within 1.5 seconds.
      • Perform the above procedure for 6 seconds or more.
    16. Disconnect terminal TC and CG after confirming the above condition.
    17. Idle the engine to raise fluid temperature.
    18. NOTE:
      • Add fluid only when the meter indicator light is on.
      • Perform the procedure while the engine is idling. See Fig 5.
    19. Lift up the vehicle right after the meter indicator light "ATF temperature warning lamp" comes on. See Fig 4.
    20. NOTE: Capacity of the overflow tube is approximately 3 cc.
    21. Remove the overflow plug.
  2. When fluid overflow (*2):
    1. Install a new gasket and overflow plug when the draining ATF becomes a trickle. Tighten overflow plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    2. Install a new "O" ring and refill plug. Tighten refill plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    3. Lower down the vehicle.
    4. Turn the ignition switch off.
  3. When fluid does not overflow (*3):
    1. Remove the refill plug. See Fig 2.
    2. Add ATF to the refill hole until it drains out from the overflow hole.
    3. Install a new gasket and overflow plug when the draining ATF becomes a trickle. Tighten overflow plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    4. Install a new "O" ring and refill plug. Tighten refill plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    5. Lower down the vehicle.
    6. Turn the ignition switch off.
  4. When adding a minimum amount of fluid (*4):
    1. Using an SST, short-circuit between terminals TC and CG of the DLC3. SST (09843-18040). See Fig 3.
    2. NOTE: Turn the A/C off.
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Slowly move the shift lever from the "P" to the 2-L position. Return the shift lever to the "P" position.
    5. NOTE: Standard: Meter indicator lamp "ATF temperature warning lamp" comes on for 2 seconds and then goes off. See Fig 4.
    6. Switch to the fluid temperature detection mode: See Fig 4:
      • Move the shift lever from the "N" to the 4D position, or from 4D to "N", within 1.5 seconds.
      • Perform the above procedure for 6 seconds or more.
    7. Disconnect terminal TC and CG after confirming the above condition.
    8. Idle the engine to increase fluid temperature.
    9. NOTE:
      • Add fluid only when the meter indicator light is on.
      • Perform the procedure while the engine is idling. See Fig 5.
    10. Lift up the vehicle right after the meter indicator light "ATF temperature warning lamp" comes on. See Fig 4.
    11. Remove the overflow plug. See Fig 2.
  5. When fluid overflows (*5): See Fig 2.
    1. Install a new gasket and overflow plug when the draining ATF becomes a trickle. Tighten overflow plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    2. Install a new "O" ring and refill plug. Tighten refill plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    3. Lower down the vehicle.
    4. Turn the ignition switch off and remove the SST.
  6. When fluid does not overflow (*6):
    1. Remove the refill plug. See Fig 2.
    2. Add ATF to the refill hole until it drains out from the overflow hole.
    3. Install a new gasket and overflow plug when the draining ATF becomes a trickle. Tighten overflow plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    4. Install a new gasket and refill plug. Tighten refill plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    5. Lower down the vehicle.
    6. Turn the ignition switch off.
