Draining & Refilling

Add automatic transmission fluid. See Fig 1:

  1. When adding a maximum amount of fluid [*1]:
    1. Lift up the vehicle.
    2. Remove the 2 bolts and transmission case cover. See Fig 2.
    3. Remove the refill plug and overflow plug. See Fig 3.
    4. CAUTION: Be sure to add ATF WS.
    5. Add ATF to the refill hole until it drains out from the overflow hole. See Fig 3.
    6. Install a gasket and the overflow plug. Tighten overflow plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    7. CAUTION: Refill amount is different depending on the related procedures.
    8. Add proper amount of ATF to the refill hole. See FLUID CAPACITIES .
    9. Install a new "O" ring and the refill plug. Tighten refill plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    10. Lower down the vehicle.
    11. NOTE: Create a short-circuit between terminals TC, OPA, and CG, for a vehicle equipped with air suspension.
    12. Using an SST, short-circuit between terminals TC and CG of the DLC3. (SST 09843-18040). See Fig 4.
    13. NOTE:
      • Turn the A/C off.
      • If the vehicle is equipped with a smart key, be sure to start the engine by inserting the key into the key cylinder.
    14. Start the engine.
    15. Slowly move the shift lever from the "P" to the "S" position, shift the gear from 1st to 6th and then return the shift lever to the "P" position.
    16. NOTE: Standard: Meter indicator light "D" comes on for 2 seconds and then goes off.
    17. Switch to the fluid temperature detection mode:
      • Move the shift lever from the "N" to the "D" position, or from "D" to "N", within 1.5 seconds.
      • Perform the above procedure for 6 seconds or more.
    18. NOTE: Do not disconnect terminal OPA on a vehicle with air suspension.
    19. Disconnect terminal TC after confirming the above condition.
    20. Idle the engine to raise fluid temperature.
    21. NOTE:
      • Add fluid only when the meter indicator light is on.
      • Perform the procedure while the engine is idling. See Fig 5.
    22. Lift up the vehicle right after the meter indicator light "D" comes on. See Fig 5.
    23. NOTE: "Overflow" indicates the condition that ATF drains out from the overflow tube.
    24. Remove the overflow plug. If ATF overflows, proceed to [*2]. If ATF does not overflow, proceed to [*3].
  2. NOTE: Capacity of the overflow tube is approximately 3 cc.
  3. When fluid overflow [*2]:
WARNING: Be careful when handing the drained ATF as its temperature is high.
    1. Install a new gasket and overflow plug when the draining ATF becomes a trickle. Tighten overflow plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    2. Install a new "O" ring and refill plug. Tighten refill plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    3. Install the transmission case cover with the 2 bolts. See Fig 2. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    4. Lower down the vehicle.
    5. Turn the ignition switch off and remove the SST.
  4. When fluid does not overflow [*3]:
    1. Remove the refill plug. See Fig 3.
    2. Add ATF to the refill hole until it drains out from the overflow hole.
    3. Install a new gasket and overflow plug when the draining ATF becomes a trickle. Tighten overflow plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    4. Install a new "O" ring and tighten the refill plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    5. Install the transmission case cover with the 2 bolts. See Fig 2. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    6. Lower down the vehicle.
    7. Turn the ignition switch off and remove the SST.
  5. When adding a minimum amount of fluid [*4]:
NOTE: Create a short-circuit between terminals TC, OPA, and CG, for a vehicle equipped with air suspension.
    1. Using an SST, short-circuit between terminals TC and CG of the DLC3. (SST 09843-18040). See Fig 4.
    2. NOTE:
      • Turn the A/C off.
      • If the vehicle is equipped with a smart key, be sure to start the engine by inserting the key into the key cylinder.
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Slowly move the shift lever from the "P" to the "S" position, shift the gear from 1st to 6th and then return the shift lever to the "P" position.
    5. NOTE: Standard: Meter indicator light "D" comes on for 2 seconds and then goes off.
    6. Switch to the fluid temperature detection mode:
      • Move the shift lever from the "N" to the "D" position, or from "D" to "N", within 1.5 seconds.
      • Perform the above procedure for 6 seconds or more.
    7. NOTE: Do not disconnect terminal OPA on a vehicle with air suspension.
    8. Disconnect terminal TC after confirming the above condition.
    9. Idle the engine to raise fluid temperature.
    10. NOTE:
      • Add fluid only when the meter indicator light is on.
      • Perform the procedure while the engine is idling. See Fig 5.
    11. Lift up the vehicle right after the meter indicator light "D" comes on. See Fig 5.
    12. NOTE: "Overflow" indicates the condition that ATF drains out from the overflow tube.
    13. Remove the overflow plug. If ATF overflows, proceed to [*5]. If ATF does not overflow, proceed to [*6]. See Fig 3.
  6. When fluid overflows [*5]: See Fig 3.
WARNING: Be careful when handing the drained ATF as its temperature is high.
    1. Install a new gasket and overflow plug when the draining ATF becomes a trickle. Tighten overflow plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    2. Install the transmission case cover with the 2 bolts. See Fig 2. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    3. Lower down the vehicle.
