Remove & Install

CAUTION: A large amount of material debris including steel (magnetic) and non magnetic (brass, aluminum or clutch fiber particles) may indicate excessive transmission wear or damage. Check magnets in oil pan for steel particles which indicate bearing, plate or hardware damage.
CAUTION: When removing transmission oil pan, filter and valve body components, note bolt size, location and length for reassembly reference.
CAUTION: When working with FIPG material, perform the following:
  • Using a razor blade and gasket scraper, remove all the old, FIPG material from the gasket surfaces.
  • Thoroughly clean all components to remove any loose material.
  • Clean both sealing surfaces with a non-residue solvent.
  • Apply FIPG in continuous line width approximately 0.04 in. (1 mm) wide along the sealing surface.
  • Parts must be assembled within 10 minutes of application. Otherwise, the FIPG material must be removed and reapplied.
  1. Disconnect battery negative terminal.
  2. Drain automatic transmission fluid:
    1. Remove the drain plug, gasket and drain the ATF.
    2. Install a new gasket and the drain plug. Tighten drain plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. NOTE: Some fluid will remain in oil pan.
  4. Remove automatic transmission oil pan sub-assy:
    1. Remove the 20 bolts, oil pan and gasket. See Figure.
    2. Remove the 3 magnets from the oil pan. See Figure.
    3. NOTE: Collect any steel chips with the removed magnets. Carefully look at the foreign objects and particles in the pan and on the magnets to guess at the type of wear which might be found in the transmission. Steel (magnetic) ... bearing, gear and clutch plate wear Brass (non-magnetic) ... bushing wear
    4. Examine particles in pan.
  5. WARNING: Be careful as some fluid will come out of the oil strainer.
  6. Remove valve body oil strainer assy:
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and oil strainer. See Figure.
    2. Remove the "O" ring from the oil strainer. See Figure.
  7. Disconnect transmission wire. See Figure:
    1. Remove the bolt and lock plate, and separate the ATF temperature sensor.
    2. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 clamps.
    3. Separate the 9 connectors from the solenoid valves.
  8. Remove transmission valve body assy. See Fig 1:
    1. Remove the 20 bolts and valve body.
    2. CAUTION: Do not drop the check ball body and spring.
    3. Remove the check ball body and spring. See Fig 2.
    4. Remove the bolt, lock plate and lock up control solenoid (SLU) and clutch control solenoid (SL2). See Fig 3.
    5. Remove the bolt and automatic transmission 3-way solenoid assy (S3).
    6. Remove the bolt and automatic transmission 3-way solenoid (S2) and automatic transmission 3-way solenoid (S4).
