Introduction

Some owners may experience a Lexus Link system error if the ignition switch is inadvertently stopped halfway between the ACC and ON position. If this error occurs, the Lexus Link system will announce: "A Lexus Link system error has been detected." In addition, an automatic emergency call or service call may be sent to the Lexus Link call center. To address this issue, an additional wiring harness has been developed to prevent this from occurring.

NOTE: Applicable Warranty*:
This repair is covered under the Lexus Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

*Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure

  1. How to Check if the Lexus Link System Is Functioning
    1. Perform the check when the ignition switch is turned ON (reference). When the ignition switch is turned ON, the LED changes from red to amber to green: each color lasts 1.5 seconds.

If the vehicle has an active Lexus Link account, the LED will stay green. If the vehicle does not have an active account, the LED will turn off. If the LED turns red, a malfunction has occurred somewhere in the system.

    2. Performing the diagnosis check (check before and after servicing the Lexus Link system).
      1. Diagnosis
        1. When the Lexus Link system is on, the ECU continuously checks if the system has any errors. If any error is detected, an audio message will play: "A Lexus Link system error has been detected. Please contact your Lexus dealer."

The message plays only once per ignition cycle.

        2. When an error is detected, check the air interface specification sheet for ways to contact the Lexus Link call center. Errors are saved into the ECU nonvolatile memory as a log of past errors.

Past and current error codes can be displayed or deleted through the LED illumination pattern codes.

    3. Current Error Codes (please perform these checks).
      1. To display the current error codes, first turn the ignition switch OFF. Then, hold the "play" button or the "volume up" button. With the button pressed, turn the ignition switch ON, OFF, ON, OFF and then ON within 15 seconds.

If the operation is successful, the Lexus Link system will communicate its diagnosis message by illuminating all 3 LEDs at the same time. The diagram below shows the timing of the 3 LED blinking patterns. If an LED is faulty, an audio message will play: "Code one. LED failure."

        Fig 1: LED Diagnostic Timing

      2. After the LED illumination pattern codes are finished, an audio message will play: "Diagnostics complete." Turning the ignition switch OFF and turning it ON again will erase current error codes.
    NOTE:
    • If the "service", "emergency", "play" or "volume up" button is stuck, this diagnostic check cannot be made.
    • If the DSP or the microcomputer in the ECU is malfunctioning, the diagnostic audio message may not play.

If the voice message, "System OK" is confirmed, there is no problem with the Lexus Link system. If error codes are displayed, refer to the Technical Information System (TIS): 2004 RX 330 Repair Manual: Diagnostic: Lexus Link System  for troubleshooting.

CAUTION: Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and wait for approximately 30 seconds. Then, disconnect the negative (-) terminal cable from the battery and wait for 90 seconds. Then you may start working on the vehicle. Disconnecting the negative (-) terminal cable within 10 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position will activate the Lexus Link system using the back-up battery and cause the system to make an emergency call. Working on the vehicle within 90 seconds after the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected may (deploy the SRS using the SRS's back-up power source.

HINT: For details about the removal of each part, refer to the Technical Information System (TIS): 2004 RX 330 Repair Manual.
