Inspection Procedure
HINT:
Check the condition of each related circuit connector before troubleshooting (See ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT INSPECTION PROCEDURE ).
- CHECK DTC
- Clear the DTC (See DTC CHECK / CLEAR ).
- Turn the engine switch off.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG) and check that no CAN communication system DTC is output.
- Start the engine.
- Drive the vehicle and turn the steering wheel to the right and left at a speed of 24 mph (35 km/h) and check if brake control system DTC (C1231/31) and/or a CAN communication system DTC are output (See
DTC CHECK / CLEAR
).
Result
DTC RESULT REFERENCEResult Proceed to Neither a CAN communication system DTC nor brake control system DTC (C1231/31) is output A CAN communication system DTC is output B Brake control system DTC (C1231/31) Is output C HINT:
When DTCs indicating a CAN communication system malfunction are output, repair the CAN communication system before repairing each corresponding sensor.
B: REPAIR CIRCUITS INDICATED BY OUTPUT DTCS (CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM)
C: REPAIR CIRCUITS INDICATED BY OUTPUT DTCS (BRAKE CONTROL SYSTEM)
A: Go to next step
- INSPECT STEERING ANGLE SENSOR
- Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
- Start the engine.
- Drive the vehicle at a speed of 24 mph (35 km/h) or more for approximately 5 seconds.
HINT:
The 4WD control ECU acquires steering angle sensor zero point every time the engine switch is turned on (IG) and vehicle is driven at 24 mph (35 km/h) or more for approximately 5 seconds. The ECU stores the previous zero point.
- Select the "DATA LIST" on the intelligent tester (See DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST
).
DATA LIST: 4WD

Center: Approx. 0 deg
Right: 3276.7 deg - Check that the steering angle sensor value changes in accordance with the steering wheel movement.
HINT:
Steering sensor value displayed on the intelligent tester is as follows:
- The steering wheel is centered: approximately 0 deg.
- The steering wheel is fully turned to left: -3276.8 deg.
- The steering wheel is fully turned to light: 3276.8 deg.
Standard: The steering angle sensor value changes in accordance with the steering wheel movement.
NG: Go to step 3
OK: REPLACE 4WD CONTROL ECU
- INSPECT STEERING ANGLE SENSOR (STEERING ANGLE SENSOR POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT)
- Disconnect the steering angle sensor connector.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG).
- Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.
