Inspection Procedure

  1. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECM - BATTERY) 
    1. Disconnect the E46 ECM connector.
    2. Fig 1: Identifying E46 ECM Connector Terminals

    3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    4. Measure the voltage.

      Standard voltage 

      STANDARD VOLTAGE

      Tester Connection Clutch Pedal Condition Specified Condition
      D(E46-21) - Body ground Depressed Below 1 V
      D(E46-21) - Body ground Released 11 to 14 V
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    OK: PROCEED TO NEXT CIRCUIT INSPECTION SHOWN IN PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE 

    NG: Go to Next Step 

  2. INSPECT CLUTCH SWITCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the clutch switch connector.

    3. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE

      Tester Connection Clutch Pedal Condition Specified Condition
      1 - 2 Switch pin free (Clutch pedal depressed) 10 kΩ or higher
      1 - 2 Switch pin pushed in (Clutch pedal released) Below 1 Ω
    4. Reconnect the clutch switch connector.

    NG: REPLACE CLUTCH SWITCH ASSEMBLY 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CLUTCH SWITCH ASSEMBLY - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the E46 ECM connector.
    2. Fig 3: Identifying E46 ECM Connector Terminal And A25 Clutch Switch Connector Terminal

    3. Disconnect the A25 clutch switch connector.
    4. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      A25-2 or D (E46-21) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      A25-2 - D (E46-21) Below 1 Ω
    5. Reconnect the clutch switch connector.
    6. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (CLUTCH SWITCH ASSEMBLY - ECM) 

    OK: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (CLUTCH SWITCH ASSEMBLY - BATTERY)
