Test 3: Cruise Speed Is Not Constant

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Operate cruise control system. If vehicle speed varies when traveling up and down inclines, and not on a level surface, inform customer that cruise controls system is operating properly. If problem occurs when vehicle is traveling on a level surface, go to next step.
  2. Operate vehicle with cruise control system disengaged. If vehicle speed still fluctuates without driver input, the problem is not with cruise control system. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS (2.0L) or SELF-DIAGNOSTICS (2.5L) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If vehicle speed does not vary, go to next step.
  3. Inspect cruise control actuator cable free play. See ACTUATOR CABLE FREE PLAY  under ADJUSTMENTS. Adjust if necessary, then retest cruise control system.
