Self-Diagnostic System

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Mustang. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Tests included in this article are written specifically for Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester functionality. Other OBD II-compatible scan tools may be used, but may not be equipped with equal test function capabilities. Refer to scan tool manufacturer's instructions.
NOTE: It is possible to retrieve instrument cluster Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) using instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE SELF-TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article.

Connect WDS tester or NGS tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Fig 1. DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and the radio. See Figure. Perform self-diagnostic test as follow:

  1. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform data link diagnostic test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC NETWORK TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - MUSTANG article. If WDS or NGS tester displays CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70=ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, repair module communications concern. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - MUSTANG article.
  2. If WDS or NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Generic Electronic Module (GEM), perform TEST C: NO COMMUNICATION WITH GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. If WDS or NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Instrument Cluster Module (ICM), perform TEST D: NO COMMUNICATION WITH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. If WDS or NGS tester responds with SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record continuous DTCs from Generic Electronic Module (GEM) and Instrument Cluster Module (ICM). Erase continuous DTCs. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform GEM and ICM self-tests. Perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  and INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  tables. Codes listed in these tables are only for testing covered in this article. For complete DTC listing, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - MUSTANG article.
  5. If no DTCs are retrieved, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
