Code 31-33: Steering Wheel Sensor Open Circuit

  1. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS) control unit (if equipped). See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, backprobe TCL module unit connector. Measure voltage between TCL module connector terminals No. 18, 56 and 57. If 4-5 volts is not present in each circuit, replace TCL module and retest.
  2. If voltage measured in each circuit is 4-5 volts, backprobe connector C-48 (18-pin) at lower end of steering column. See Figure and Fig 2 . Measure voltage between connector terminals No. 7, 8 and 17. If 4-5 volts is not present in each circuit, inspect and repair suspect circuit(s) between intermediate connector C-48 and TCL module.
  3. If voltage measured in each circuit is 4-5 volts, turn ignition switch to LOCK position. On vehicles equipped with ECS, disconnect connector C-48. Connect jumper wire between ECS control unit harness connector G-13 terminal No. 116 and ground. See Fig 3 . Check continuity between C-48 connector (steering wheel sensor side) terminal No. 2 (Black wire) and ground. See Fig 2 .
  4. If continuity exists, replace steering wheel sensor. See STEERING WHEEL SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If continuity does not exist, inspect and repair circuit between ECS control unit and steering wheel sensor. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  5. On vehicles without ECS, disconnect connector C-48. See Figure . Disconnect TCL module harness connector. Connect jumper wire between TCL module harness connector terminal No. 58 and ground. Check continuity between C-48 connector (steering wheel sensor side) terminal No. 2 (Blue wire) and ground.
  6. If continuity exists, replace steering wheel sensor. See STEERING WHEEL SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If continuity does not exist, inspect and rep module and steering wheel sensor. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
