Output Current Test

NOTE: A slightly discharged battery should be used, as a fully charged battery may not allow full generator output.
NOTE: It is recommended that an inductive-type ammeter be used during testing. A poor terminal connection could be corrected during installation of ammeter, reducing the possibility of finding a problem.
  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect generator output wire from terminal "B". Connect positive lead of 100-amp (130-amp on Diamante) ammeter to terminal "B" and negative lead to disconnected output lead. See Fig 1 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
CAUTION: Tighten each ammeter connection securely, as heavy current flow will exist. DO NOT use clip connections on ammeter.
  2. Connect positive voltmeter lead (0-20 volts range) to generator terminal "B" and negative lead to ground. Install a tachometer and reconnect negative battery cable. Leave hood open.
  3. Ensure voltmeter indicates battery voltage. If voltage is not present, check for open circuit in wire between generator terminal "B" and positive battery terminal. Check grounds and fusible link.
  4. NOTE: Because battery output current decreases after engine is started, output value must be obtained as soon after load and engine speed are increased as possible.
  5. Turn headlights and interior lights on. Start engine and allow to idle. Set headlights to high beam and heater blower switch to HIGH. Increase engine speed to 2500 RPM and note generator output current on ammeter. Minimum output current should be within specification. See GENERATOR MINIMUM OUTPUT SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  6. NOTE: If electrical load is too small or if temperature of generator or ambient air is too high minimum output current may be less than specified. Increase electrical load by leaving headlights on before starting engine to discharge battery or cool generator as necessary and repeat test.
  7. If minimum output is not obtained and generator wiring is okay, repair generator. Operate engine at idle speed after the test.
