Installation (Eclipse & Galant)

CAUTION: Install fuel pump packing onto fuel tank. If fuel pump packing is installed onto fuel pump module, packing lip will be damaged upon installation and a fuel leak may occur.
CAUTION: When tightening, DO NOT let fuel pump module turn together with cap. If mating marks are misaligned, float may measure remaining amount of fuel incorrectly, causing low fuel warning light to malfunction.
  1. Ensure that fuel tank is not damaged or deformed. Install fuel pump packing onto fuel tank. Check packing condition. If packing is damaged or deformed, replace with new packing.
  2. Apply soapy water to inside of packing. Install fuel pump module assembly into fuel tank without tilting fuel pump module assembly. Ensure packing is not folded over. See Fig 1.
  3. Ensure fuel pump module mating marks are aligned. See Fig 2. Using Fuel Pump Module Remover/Installer (MB991480), install fuel pump module. Ensure fuel pump module does not turn together with cap and mating marks remain aligned. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
  4. Apply soapy water around fuel tank packing. Plug vapor hose and main hose to fuel tank. Using fuel return hose, pressurize fuel tank to approximately 1.45 psi (.10 kg/cm2 ) or less. Check for leaks around fuel pump. If bubbles are detected around fuel pump, replace fuel tank packing.
