Engine Backfires: Sensor/System

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Chevrolet Corvette. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Inspect the secondary Air Injection (AIR) system.
  2. Inspect the air intake system and crankcase for air leaks.
  3. Inspect the crankcase ventilation valve for proper operation. Place a finger over the inlet hole in the valve end several times. The valve should snap back. If not, replace the valve.
  4. Inspect for an inaccurate speedometer. See appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  5. Use a scan tool in order to monitor the Knock Sensor (KS) system for excessive spark retard activity.
