Differential Assembly: Disassembly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Aztek and 2003 Buick Rendezvous. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Do not disassemble the side cover or differential assembly. Oil seal damage or the entry of foreign material into the hydraulic system may effect system operation.
  1. Remove the lubricant drain plug and gasket from the differential. See Figure . Allow the lubricant to drain. Remove vent hose assembly and clamp. See VENT HOSE  . Remove clutch pump check valve. Remove "O" rings from check valve. The O-ring seals may be reused if not cut or damaged.
  2. NOTE: Do not remove the dampeners from the torque tube. Removal and reinstallation may effect component noise and/or vibration levels.
  3. Remove torque tube bracket nut, bolt and spacers. Remove torque tube bracket. See Figure . Remove torque tube-to-differential bolts. Separate torque tube from differential. Remove bolts from differential.
  4. Remove pinion housing and shim. Remove oil seal and "O" ring from pinion housing. Remove left and right axle shaft oil seals. See REAR AXLE SHAFT SEALS  .
