Incorrect ECM Programming

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 GMC Sierra, 2002 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2002 Chevrolet Silverado, and 2002 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. There are only a few situations when reprogramming a ECM is appropriate, such as the following:
    • A new service ECM is installed.
    • A ECM from another vehicle is installed.
    • Revised software or calibration files have been released for this vehicle.
  2. NOTE: DO NOT re-program the ECM with the SAME software or calibration files that are already present in the ECM. This is not an effective repair for any type of driveability problem.
  3. Verify that the ECM contains the correct software or calibration. If incorrect programming is found, reprogram the ECM with the most current software or calibration. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING.
