Differential Case Assembly: Reassembly

  1. Install thrust washer, side gear and pinion gear in left differential housing. Insert pinion shaft and drive in roll pin. Stake roll pin. Install thrust washer and side gear to right differential housing. Assemble case halves. Install ring gear and tighten bolts to 42-49 ft. lbs. (57-67 N.m). See Fig 1 .
  2. Measure pinion gear backlash by inserting dial indicator through access window of case. See Fig 2 . Backlash should be .005-.007" (.13-.18 mm). If backlash is not within specification, replace thrust washer(s). Using press, install taper roller bearing.
