Diagnosis & Repair

  1. Connect scan tester. See Figure. Access ECM behind glove box. Disconnect ECM E7 connector. See Figure. On A/T models, using an ohmmeter measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 6 (Gray wire) at ECM E7 connector. On M/T models, measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 13 (Gray wire) at ECM E7 connector. On all models, if resistance is infinite, go to step 3). If resistance is not infinite, go to next step.
  2. Check knock sensor. See SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article. Replace knock sensor as necessary. If sensor is okay, go to next step.
  3. Check for an open or short circuit between knock sensor and ECM. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, substitute knock sensor with known-good sensor. Clear and then retrieve codes. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM . If code is still present, replace ECM. If code is no longer present, replace sensor.
