Diagnosis & Repair

  1. Disconnect CMP sensor connector. See Fig 1. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between CMP sensor connector terminals. Resistance should be 135-220 ohms (cold sensor) or 175-255 ohms (hot sensor). Replace CMP sensor as necessary. If CMP sensor is okay, go to next step.
  2. Check for open or short circuit in wiring harness between ECM and CMP sensor. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair wiring as necessary. If wiring harness is okay, go to next step.
  3. Check CMP sensor air gap. See BASIC TESTING article. If air gap is not within specification, replace distributor. If air gap is okay, replace ECM and retest.
