NOTE: THIS DOCUMENT SUPERSEDES THE PREVIOUS RETAILER TECHNICAL JOURNAL 21368 DATED 3-05-2010. PLEASE UPDATE YOUR FILES.

Changes to this document:

  • 01-03-2011 New information regarding version RSE version 2.2 introduced in October 2010.
  • 03-03-2010 New information regarding version RSE 2.1 which was introduced December 2009.
  • 10-05-2009 RSE 2.0 Programming instructions on page 12-14 have been corrected and restructured.

DESCRIPTION

In an effort to save labor time, reduce inventory carrying costs and improve client service, VCNA has developed a method and sourced the parts to service Retailer and Port installed RSE (Rear Seat Entertainment) DVD/LCD Electronics Modules only instead of the entire head restraint assembly. If diagnosis indicates that failure is caused by the RSE DVD/LCD Electronics Module, replace the DVD/LCD Electronics Module only. It is no longer necessary to remove the head restraint and disturb the wiring that is installed in the seat upholstery. All work can be performed with the head restraint installed in the seat back.

NOTE: As a result of this new method, RTJ 20961: Replacement of Accessory Installed Dual DVD/Screen RSE (Rear Seat Entertainment) Head Restraint assembly is only valid if the entire head restraint assembly needs to be replaced or removed.

SERVICE

There are 5 different versions of the accessory RSE in current use

If it is necessary to replace a failed DVD/LCD Electronics Module, first identify the system (see SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION  ) to select the correct kit and follow the appropriate repair method:

Acc RSE 1.0 and 1.1 pages 5 - 8

Acc RSE 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 pages 9 - 17

SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION

There are currently 4 accessory/port installed systems in use today. They are not interchangeable.  The illustrations below will guide the technician to select the correct replacement head unit kit.

Acc RSE 1.0  First generation - An audio signal is broadcast via FM transmitters from the DVD/LCD Electronics Module to the vehicle's FM radio. Audio and video inputs are of the RCA type and are installed on the underside of the head restraint. Chrome plated head restraint support posts are used.

Acc RSE 1.1  First generation - In-car audio is hard wired to the AUX input via AII (auxiliary input interface) installed beneath the center console. Audio and video inputs are of the RCA type and are installed on the underside of the head restraint. Black, powder-coated head restraint posts are used.

NOTE: Acc RSE1.0 and 1.1 Head restraints and displays are identical in outward appearance. The easiest way to identify which version you have is to visually inspect the coating treatment of the head restraint support posts by pressing down on the seat upholstery where the posts enter the seat back as illustrated below.
