Shift Control Cable

WARNING: Ensure lifts, jacks and safety stands are placed properly. Apply parking brake, and block rear wheels so vehicle will not roll off stands.
  1. Shift the transaxle into the Neutral position.
  2. CAUTION: When prying with a flat-tip screwdriver, wrap it with protective tape to prevent damages.
NOTE: Take care not to scratch the console panel, front seat, and related parts.
  3. Remove the center console in numbered sequence. See Fig 1 .
  4. Remove the lock pin from the link adjuster. See Fig 2 .
  5. Insert a .16" (4.0 mm) pin into the shift lever bracket through the Neutral position cutout of the shift lever. See Fig 3 .
  6. Verify that the control lever is in the Neutral position on the transaxle. See Fig 4 .
  7. CAUTION: Do not start the engine.
  8. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), verify that the Neutral indicator light illuminates. See Fig 5 .
  9. NOTE: There are two holes in the link adjuster. They are positioned 90° apart to allow link adjustments in 1/4 turn increments.
  10. Check that the hole in the link adjuster is perfectly aligned with the hole in the link rod. See Fig 6 .
  11. If not perfectly aligned, loosen the lock nut on the link adjuster, and adjust as required. See Fig 2 .
  12. Tighten the lock nut to the specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  13. Install the lock pin on the adjuster. If you feel the lock pin binding as you reinstall it, the link rod is still out of adjustment and must be readjusted.
  14. NOTE: Replace the lock pin if it does not snap over the link adjuster securely.
  15. Ensure the lock pin is seated securely in the adjuster.
  16. Move the shift lever to each gear, and verify that the A/T gear position indicator matches the transmission range switch.
  17. Start the engine, and check the shift lever in all gears. If any gear does not work properly, see TROUBLE SHOOTING in appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.
  18. Install the center console. Installation is the reverse of removal. See Fig 1 .
  19. NOTE: If necessary, replace any damaged clips. Ensure the wire harnesses are not pinched. Ensure the connectors and bulb socket are connected properly.
  20. Insert the ignition key into the key cylinder on the A/T gear position indicator panel, and verify that the shift lock lever is released.
