Rear Wiper Inoperative

Possible Causes:

CAUTION: Always turn ignition off before disconnecting or connecting any control module connector. Failure to do so could result in damage to control module.
NOTE: Ensure vehicle being tested has a fully charged battery. If it does not, false symptoms may occur.
NOTE: For component location, see appropriate illustration under COMPONENT LOCATIONS  . For terminal identification, see appropriate illustration under CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For circuit and wire color identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  . For component removal and installation procedures, see appropriate component under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  .

Testing:

  1. Turn ignition off. Substitute a known-good relay in place of the Rear Wiper Relay in the PDC. Turn ignition on. Turn Rear Wipers on. Do the Wipers Operate Properly? If yes, replace Rear Wiper Relay. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If no, go to next step.
  2. NOTE: The test light must illuminate brightly. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.
  3. Turn ignition off. Remove Rear Wiper Relay. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe Rear Wiper Relay harness connector terminals No. 86 and 87. Does test light illuminate brightly at both circuits? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair open in Fused B+ circuit(s). Check PDC Fuse "J" (20-amp). If fuse is open, check Fused B+ circuit(s) for a short to ground. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  4. Disconnect CTM C3 harness connector. Measure resistance between CTM C3 harness connector terminal No. 9 and Rear Wiper Relay harness connector terminal No. 85. Is resistance more than 5 ohms? If yes, repair open in Rear Wiper Relay Control circuit. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If no, go to next step.
  5. Reconnect CTM C3 harness connector. Reinstall Rear Wiper Relay. Connect DRBIII(R) to DLC. Turn ignition on. Using DRBIII(R), select WIPER SYSTEM MONITORS, then read REAR WIPER state. Turn Rear Wiper Switch on. Does DRBIII(R) display change from REAR WIPER: OFF to REAR WIPER: ON? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace Rear Wiper Switch in the A/C-Heater Control Module. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  6. Turn ignition off. Remove Rear Wiper Relay. Turn ignition on. Using a 12-volt test light connected to 12 volts, probe Rear Wiper Relay harness connector terminal No. 85. Does the test light illuminate brightly? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  12 .
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Rear Wiper Motor harness connector. Measure resistance between Rear Wiper Motor harness connector terminal No. 2 and Rear Wiper Relay harness connector terminal No. 30. Is resistance more than 5 ohms? If yes, repair open in Rear Wiper Motor Control circuit. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If no, go to next step.
  8. Reinstall Rear Wiper Relay. Using a 12-volt test light connected to 12 volts, probe Rear Wiper Motor harness connector terminal No. 1. Does test light illuminate brightly? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair open in Rear Wiper Motor Ground circuit. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  9. NOTE: Rear Wiper Park Switch Sense circuit may also be referred to as Rear Wiper Motor Control circuit.
  10. Disconnect CTM C2 harness connector. Measure resistance between CTM C2 harness connector terminal No. 12 and Rear Wiper Motor harness connector terminal No. 3. Is resistance more than 5 ohms? If yes, repair open in Rear Wiper Park Switch Sense circuit. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If no, go to next step.
  11. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and Rear Wiper Motor harness connector terminal No. 3. Is any voltage present? If yes, repair Rear Wiper Park Switch Sense circuit for a short to voltage. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If no, go to next step.
  12. Turn ignition off. Reconnect CTM C2 harness connector. Turn Rear Wiper Switch out of Park position. Measure resistance between Rear Wiper Switch terminals No. 2 and 3 (component side). Is resistance more than 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  12 .
  13. If there are no possible causes remaining, replace Rear Wiper Motor. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  14. If there are no possible causes remaining, replace CTM. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
