Generator Test
NOTE:
Before starting test, ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure all fuses are in good condition
- Check fusible link. Replace if necessary. Turn ignition on. Observe charge warning light on instrument panel. If light illuminates, go to step 3). If light does not illuminate, go to next step.NOTE: Terminals "S", "L", "B", and "E" are marked on generator rear cover. Terminal "F" is an internal terminal.
- Disconnect terminals "S" and "L". Using a fused jumper wire, ground terminal "L" at harness. If light does not illuminate, replace indicator bulb and repeat step 1). If light illuminates, replace IC regulator.
- Start engine and allow it to idle. If light does not illuminate, system is okay. If light illuminates, turn engine off. Check drive belt tension, connections at terminals "B", "S" and "L" at generator, and fuse for terminal "S". Repair or replace as necessary. Start engine and allow it to idle. If light is not illuminated, system is okay. If light remains illuminated, go to next step.
- Raise engine speed to 1500 RPM. Using a DVOM, measure voltage at terminal "B". If reading is greater than 15.5 volts, replace IC regulator. If reading is zero volts, field circuit is open. Check condition of rotor coil, rotor slip ring and brush. Repair or replace as necessary.
