DTC P1140: Left Intake Valve Timing Control (IVTC) Position Sensor

  1. Check Input Signal Circuit  - Turn ignition off. Disconnect left IVTC position sensor harness connector. See Figure. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Using an ohmmeter, check continuity between IVTC position sensor harness connector terminal No. 3 (Blue/White shielded wire) and ECM harness connector terminal No. 27. If no continuity exists, repair fault in Blue/White shielded wire wire. If continuity exists, go to next step.
  2. Check Ground Circuit  - Turn ignition off. Loosen and retighten engine ground bolts. See Figure. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between IVTC position sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire) and ground. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair fault in circuit and retest.
  3. Check Camshaft  - Check for accumulation of debris on or near the signal portion of camshaft sensor. Remove or replace as necessary. If no faults are found, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect IVTC position sensor harness connector. Loosen IVTC position sensor fixing bolt. With ambient temperature about 77°F (25°C), measure resistance between CMP sensor terminals. Resistance should be 730-890 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace sensor.
  5. Disconnect system harness connectors and inspect for damage or corrosion. Check ECM pins and terminals for damage or corrosion. Repair as necessary and retest. If fault is still present, replace IVTC position sensor.
