Transaxle Disassembly

  1. Remove transmission from transaxle. Remove neutral start switch. Remove speedometer driven gear housing from extension housing. Remove extension housing and gasket. Remove speedometer drive gear. Remove output shaft sleeve.
NOTE: Be careful not to lose locking balls.
CAUTION: DO NOT  turn transmission over as this will contaminate valve body with foreign materials in bottom of pan.
  2. Remove pan and gasket. Examine particles in pan. Remove magnet and use it to collect any steel chips. Look carefully at chips and particles in pan and on magnet to anticipate what type of wear may be found in transmission.
  3. Steel (magnetic) means bearing, gear or clutch plate wear. Brass (nonmagnetic) means bushing wear. Turn transmission over and remove tubes by prying up both tube ends with a large screwdriver. Remove screen.
  4. Remove valve body by removing fourteen bolts, six steel balls and valve vibrating stopper. To remove accumulator pistons and springs, position a rag to catch each piston and using low pressure compressed air, 14 psi (1 kg/cm2 ) pop each piston into rag. See Fig 1 .
CAUTION: Keep face away to avoid injury. DO NOT  use regular high pressure air.

  7. Remove input shaft, driven sprocket and chain by removing snap ring and pulling both sprockets out uniformly. Place case, facing up, on a wooden block and remove front support. Measure clearance between case tip and front clutch tip for reference at reassembly. Clearance should be .024-.063" (.6-1.6 mm). See Fig 4 .
