Installation (M5OD-R1 & M5OD-R2)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 Ford Ranger, 2003 Ford Pickup, 2003 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the speedometer drive gear. See Figure. Install the speedometer gear retaining ring.
  2. Apply a small bead of silicone rubber to the surface of the extension housing. Use Silicone Rubber (D6AZ-19562-AA) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESB-M4G92-A.
    NOTE: Extension housing must be installed within four minutes after applying silicone.
  3. Install the extension housing. See Figure. Position the extension housing. Install the bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Use Extension Housing Seal Replacer (A) to install a NEW extension housing seal (B).
  5. Raise and position the transmission. Install the exhaust pipe bracket. See Figure. Position the exhaust pipe bracket. Install the exhaust pipe bracket nuts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. Install the transmission mount. See Figure. Position the transmission mount. Install the mount bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. Install the crossmember. See Figure. Position the crossmember. Install the crossmember bolts/nuts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  8. Install the heat shield bolts (one each side) and tighten to specification. See Figure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  9. Remove the High-Lift Jack. Install the transmission mount nuts and tighten to specification. See Figure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  10. Install the VSS. See Figure. Install the bolt and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Connect the electrical connector.
  11. Install the transfer case, if equipped. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION ARTICLE in TRANSFER CASES.
  12. Install the rear driveshaft. See Figure. Position the rear driveshaft. Install the bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
    NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance, align the index marks on the driveshaft and the rear axle pinion flange made during removal.
  13. Fill transmission (A) with fluid until it reaches the bottom of the fill port (B) and install the bolt (C). See RECOMMENDED FLUIDS  under LUBRICATION.
  14. Lower the vehicle. Connect the battery ground cable. If equipped with air suspension, reactivate the system by turning on the air suspension switch.
