Removal (M5OD-R1 & M5OD-R2)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 Ford Ranger, 2003 Ford Pickup, 2003 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2003 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac.   1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. If equipped, turn the air suspension switch OFF.
  3. With vehicle in Neutral, raise and support the vehicle.
  4. Drain the transmission fluid.
  5. Remove and support the rear driveshaft. Remove the bolts. See Fig 1. Remove the rear driveshaft.
    NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance, index-mark the driveshaft to the rear axle pinion flange so it can be installed in its original position.
  6. Remove the transfer case, if equipped. See appropriate TRANSFER CASE article.
  7. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) bolt. See Fig 2. Remove the VSS.
  8. Use the High-Lift Jack (A) to support the transmission (B). Secure the transmission with the strap (C). See Fig 3.
  9. Remove the transmission mount nuts. See Fig 4.
  10. Remove the heat shield bolts (one each side). See Fig 5.
  11. Remove the crossmember bolts (three each side). Remove the crossmember. See Fig 6.
  12. Remove the mount bolts. See Fig 7. Remove the transmission mount.
  13. Remove the exhaust pipe bracket nuts. See Fig 8. Remove the exhaust pipe bracket.
  14. Lower the transmission to access extension housing bolts. Use Seal Remover (A) to remove the extension housing seal (B). See Fig 9.
  15. Remove the extension housing bolts. See Fig 10. Remove the extension housing.
  16. Remove the speedometer gear retaining ring. See Fig 11. Remove the speedometer drive gear.
